OK Maldives has been a fixture in the Maldivian diving scene since 1983, establishing itself as a specialist in long-range liveaboard expeditions. Rather than following the standard tourist routes, the centre focuses on remote itineraries that take you from the extreme north to the deep south of the archipelago.

Based in Male, the operation is built around a philosophy of transparency and flexibility. Whether you are looking for the wild, less-frequented routes of the Haa Dhaal Atolls or the diverse channels of the Ari Atoll, the focus remains on providing a professional, human-centric service that adapts to the natural rhythm of the ocean.

The team is composed of passionate professionals, including PADI instructors and BEES-qualified guides, who prioritise a flexible approach to diving. This expertise allows the crew to adjust itineraries based on weather conditions or specific diver requests, ensuring you find the best conditions for the day.

Communication is straightforward, with the team being fluent in both English and French. This multilingual capability ensures that technical briefings and dive planning are handled with the precision required for the Maldives' varying current conditions.

The centre offers PADI training, with a specific focus on Nitrox. If you are looking to extend your certification during your liveaboard, Nitrox courses can be arranged on-site.

While the primary focus is on exploration and safari diving, the professional staff is available to assist with various training needs to ensure you are prepared for the currents and depths encountered on the trip.

The primary vessel for these expeditions is the Equator, a 30m yacht designed for liveaboard comfort and dive efficiency. It features 10 air-conditioned double cabins, including three suites with private toilets, making it a solid platform for extended stays at sea.

On board the Equator, you will find amenities such as filtered water, mineral water, tea, coffee, and snacks like cakes and bananas. Meals consist of fresh fish, meat, vegetables, and fruit. The yacht is also equipped with a library, CD player, television, DVD player, air conditioning, and 220v generators to keep your electronics running.

For those travelling light, the centre offers a rental service for essential kit, including BCDs, regulators, and dive computers. It is important to notify the team in advance if you require equipment hire.

Safety is a core component of the shore and boat operations, with oxygen safety protocols and availability maintained for all guests. The centre is also one of the few in the region equipped to support rebreather divers.

The Maldives offers spectacular encounters with large pelagics. You will regularly see Manta rays (Mobula alfredi), various shark species including Grey reef sharks (Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos), Whitetip reef sharks (Triaenodon obesus), and even the occasional Whale shark (Rhincodon typus). Other significant sightings include Tiger sharks, Bull sharks, and Silvertip sharks (Carcharhinus albimarginatus).

On the reefs and thilas, the biodiversity is immense. Look for Napoleon wrasse (Cheilinus undulatus), various species of Grouper (Epinephelinae), and large schools of Fusilier (Caesio), Snappers (Lutjanidae), and Trevally. You will also encounter many species of Ray (Batoidea), including Eagle rays (Aetobatus) and Spotted eagle ray (Aetobatus narinari).

Macro life and smaller residents are equally present for the observant diver. Keep an eye out for Nudibranch (Chromodoris willani), various species of Scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae), Frogfish (Antennariidae), and Moray eel (Muraenidae). The reef structure itself is decorated with a wealth of life, from colourful Soft coral (Alcyonacea) and Gorgonian (Gorgonacea) to various species of Anemone (Actiniaria) and Hard coral (Scleractinia).

Diving in the Maldives is influenced by seasonal shifts, with the best period generally running from September to May. You should be aware that the monsoon season during June, July, and August can bring different conditions.

Currents are a constant factor in the Maldives and are present throughout the year, sometimes reaching strong levels, particularly around the channels and passes. Divers should be comfortable with drift diving to make the most of the sites.
