Sun Diving @ Siyam World

Sun Diving has been a fixture of the Maldivian diving scene since 1994. Founded by M. Siyam Ahmed and Hussein Salim, the organisation has grown into a sophisticated operation with a presence in five major luxury resorts, including Siyam World and Sun Siyam Olhuveli.

The centre is built on a foundation of technical knowledge and environmental stewardship. They integrate coral restoration projects into their ethos, ensuring that your time underwater contributes to the long-term health of the atolls.

The operation is led by General Manager Koen, who has overseen dive operations at the centre since 2004. The team consists of 8 professional instructors capable of handling everything from introductory dives to advanced professional certifications.

As an SSI affiliated centre, the instruction follows a structured, safety-first methodology. The staff is multilingual, providing support for international divers looking to advance through the SSI progression or simply enjoy guided reef excursions.

The training programme is extensive, covering the full spectrum of SSI certifications. You can begin with Try Scuba or the Open Water Diver course and progress through Advanced Adventurer, Divemaster, and eventually Open Water Instructor or Instructor Trainer levels.

Specialised training is also a core part of the curriculum. Divers can pursue skills in Deep Diving, Wreck Diving, Decompression Diving, and Sidemount Diving, or refine their technique through Perfect Buoyancy and Stress & Rescue courses. For those interested in non-traditional disciplines, the centre also offers Freediving and Mermaid programmes.

The centre provides full equipment hire for divers who prefer not to travel with their own kit. This includes regulators, BCDs, wetsuits, fins, and torches for night diving.

Nitrox is available on-site, allowing you to extend your bottom time on deeper profiles or multi-dive days. The facility is designed to support both recreational divers and those pursuing more technical specialties.

The reefs are home to a vast array of larger species. You will regularly encounter grey reef sharks (Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos), whitetip reef sharks (Triaenodon obesus), and eagle rays (Aetobatus). Large schools of tuna (Thunnus), jack (Carangidae), and barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda) are common in the channels, while Napoleon wrasse (Cheilinus undulatus) and various turtles (Cheloniidae) frequent the reef slopes.

The hard coral (Scleractinia) and soft coral (Alcyonacea) structures provide a complex habitat for smaller inhabitants. You can observe colourful angelfish (Pomacanthidae), butterflyfish (Chaetodon), and schooling fusilier (Caesio) moving through the reef. Many divers also spot parrotfish (Calotomus), snapper (Lutjanus), and various species of grouper (Epinephelus).

Macro life enthusiasts will find plenty to explore in the crevices and sandy patches. The sites host a variety of nudibranch (Chromodoris willani), shrimp, and moray eel (Muraenidae). Look closely for scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae), frogfish (Antennarius), and garden eel (Gorgasia) amongst the coral formations.

Seasonality plays a major role in sightings. From May to November, the presence of manta ray (Mobula alfredi) and whale shark (Rhincodon typus) increases significantly due to plankton availability.

Diving in the Maldives involves a variety of environments, from sheltered house reefs to exposed channels. Many of the best sites, such as those in the channels, are subject to moderate to strong currents, which are ideal for drift diving and observing pelagic species.

Some sites, such as Velavaru Kandu, offer relaxed drift dives suitable for most levels, while others like Shark Point or Madivaru Express require more experience due to challenging current conditions. Nitrox is highly recommended for these deeper or more current-driven excursions to maximise safety and bottom time.
