Dhonkalo Thila, Male: Maldives' Manta Ray Cleaning Station

Dhonkalo, often referred to as Donkalo Thila or Dhonkalo Thila, is a distinct reef structure in the Maldivian seascape, known for its role as a critical manta ray cleaning station. While some sources associate it with Ari Atoll, it is also accessible from the Male area, typically as part of liveaboard or resort day-boat itineraries. The dive here centers around a sandy channel and the upper reef, where the primary attraction, the manta rays, congregate.

The topography of Dhonkalo Thila is characterized by this sandy channel, which acts as the focal point for manta ray activity. Unlike some of the more coral-rich thilas in the region, the reef itself is relatively barren. However, this starkness highlights the pelagic life, drawing your attention to the open water and the movements of the larger creatures that frequent the site. The dive profile often involves positioning yourself to observe the mantas as they approach the cleaning stations.

Manta rays (Manta birostris or Manta alfredi) are the undisputed stars of Dhonkalo. This site consistently delivers opportunities to witness these elegant elasmobranchs, often in significant numbers. You'll find them forming trains, gliding effortlessly over the sandy channel, waiting their turn to be cleaned by smaller fish. Observing their slow, undulating movements in their natural environment is the core experience here, making each dive a potential close encounter.

The current at Dhonkalo is a defining factor and can be highly variable, ranging from mild to very strong. When the tidal flow flushes through the channel, currents can become challenging, sometimes described as 'savage'. This variability means that conditions can shift quickly, requiring divers to be attentive and experienced in managing drift and positioning, especially when holding station to watch the mantas.

Beyond the manta rays, the site hosts a variety of other pelagic and reef fish. You can expect to see jacks and snappers moving through the water column, often in schools. Fusiliers are also common, adding to the dynamic feel of the site. On the sandy bottom or near the reef, stingrays and eagle rays can be spotted, completing the picture of a vibrant, albeit specialized, marine ecosystem.

Dhonkalo's reputation as a manta ray hotspot is well-earned, with reports of up to 15 individuals observed on a single dive. This concentration of mantas, coupled with their predictable cleaning and feeding behaviors, sets Dhonkalo apart. While the reef structure itself might not be the most vibrant in terms of coral, the sheer volume and consistent presence of these gentle giants make it a signature Maldivian dive when conditions align.
