Family-run and split between two buildings on the same street, Hôtel du Port et de l'Aven suits divers who would rather spend their time close to the water than in a large resort. One building looks towards the port, while the other has its own garden, so your choice of room changes the feel of the stay more than a long list of facilities ever could.

The setting is straightforward and properly useful: a sandy beach is within an easy walk, the restaurant is on site, and the bar overlooks the port. Once you have dried off, eaten and watched the tide turn, the evening does not demand much organisation. That can be a considerable luxury after a day involving boats, ladders and more neoprene than anyone really needs.

You stay in Port-Manec'h, in Névez, on the meeting point of the Belon and Aven rivers. The hotel is about 3.1 miles from the centre of Névez, but the useful bit of geography is closer at hand: Port Manec'h Beach is roughly 300 metres away on foot. Anse de Rospico Beach is about 1.8 miles away by road.

The immediate surroundings are coastal rather than urban. Two restaurants are within roughly 0.3 miles, while the named bars and cafés listed nearby are farther away, so the hotel's own dining room and bar matter if you prefer not to drive after dinner. Concarneau railway station is about 11 miles away by road, and Lorient South Brittany Airport is around 28 miles away, with a driving time of about 45 minutes.

The room choice is mainly about outlook and sleeping arrangement. Port-facing rooms place you on the hotel side of the street with the harbour in view; sea-view rooms make more sense if looking out towards the water is part of the point of coming here. Garden-view rooms belong to the second building, where the private garden gives the setting a different character.

For a couple, the Double Room with Sea View is the obvious choice when the view matters, while the Twin Room with Sea View keeps the sleeping arrangements separate without giving up the outlook. If three people are sharing, the Triple Room with Sea View or the Economy Triple Room offers a more practical layout than trying to improvise with two beds. The larger family rooms are the ones to consider when several sleepers need their own space, although the booking details should be checked carefully against your group before you commit.

Every room has a private bathroom with a bath or shower, towels, toiletries and a hairdryer. You also have heating, a wardrobe, an alarm clock, a flat-screen television and free Wi-Fi throughout the property. Soundproof rooms are available, which is welcome when your body clock has been reset by early starts, changing tides and the general business of being a diver.

The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a terrace looking over the port and the Aven and Belon estuary. The cooking is local and homemade, centred on products from the sea rather than a long parade of international dishes. It is the sort of arrangement that lets you finish the day near the water instead of searching for somewhere to eat with damp hair and a collapsing appetite.

Breakfast is continental. Dinner can be booked as part of the stay, and half-board packages are available, giving you a useful option when diving plans make spontaneous restaurant-hopping less appealing. The menu is built around traditional cooking and seafood, so the place has a clear Breton identity without needing to shout about it.

One bar overlooks the port. Wine and champagne are available, and the restaurant and bar together give you the basics for the post-dive sequence: a drink, a proper meal and a view of boats rather than another screen. Continuous snacks and late dinners are not part of the stated offer, so keep an eye on your timing if your day on the water runs long.

The beach is close enough for an easy walk, and the surrounding coast gives you a reason to bring shoes that can cope with more than hotel corridors. Walking tours and hiking are available, with the coastal paths and trail 34 specifically suited to days when you want scenery without another tank on your back.

A sailing school is located on the beach, adding a practical nautical option for a non-diving day or for a travelling companion who prefers staying above the surface. Fishing is also available, while canoeing takes place off site. The latter is chargeable, so it belongs in the day's planning rather than in the category of wandering out of the front door and seeing what happens.

Back at the hotel, the garden, terrace, sun terrace and outdoor furniture give you places to sit without retreating straight to the bedroom. A picnic area is also available. There is no elaborate programme to follow, which is rather the point here: walk the coast, sit by the port, watch the weather change, and let your legs remember that they are attached to you.

The hotel operates from April to September, so it is a seasonal base rather than a year-round address. Check-in runs from 14:00 to 22:00, and check-out from 08:00 to 11:00. Express check-in and check-out are available, while luggage storage can help if your travel times do not line up neatly with those hours.

Free public street parking is available nearby, but it cannot be reserved. That is useful for a driving holiday, though you should allow yourself a little time to find a space rather than treating parking as a guaranteed spot directly outside the door. Upper floors are reached by stairs only, so this is worth factoring in if luggage, knees or post-dive fatigue make stairs less appealing.

Children of all ages are welcome, and family rooms are available. Cots and extra beds are not available, while pets are not allowed. The hotel accepts cash and ANCV holiday vouchers.
