Hôtel Le Rocher puts you in the middle of Calvi rather than out on the edge of it. The setting is a three-star town hotel with 20 rooms, a useful base if you want the sea, dinner and the town's everyday life within reach instead of spending your evenings organising transport.

You get the basics that matter when your kit bag has already had a full working day: air conditioning, soundproofing, free WiFi throughout the hotel and a private balcony in every room. There is also a lift, nearby free private parking and family accommodation, so the choice is not limited to couples travelling light.

The atmosphere is urban and straightforward. You can shower, cool down, step out onto the balcony and decide whether dinner is a short walk away or whether the day has earned an early night.

The address is on Boulevard Wilson, on Calvi's main artery and in the heart of the town. That puts shops and restaurants close at hand, with Calvi Train Station around 700 feet away on foot. Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste is about 1,850 feet away, giving you a nearby historic stop when you want something to do that does not involve either fins or a menu.

The sea is a five-minute walk away, with fine sand at the beach. Pinède Beach is roughly 1,700 feet away on foot, while Roncu Beach is about 2,300 feet away by car. Alga Beach is farther out at around 1.8 miles on foot, or about 1.9 miles by road, so the closest beaches are the sensible choice for an easy swim between other plans.

Calvi–Sainte-Catherine Airport is around 3.4 miles away by road, with a drive of about 11 minutes. Bastia–Poretta Airport is a much longer road transfer, around 60 miles, so your arrival airport makes a real difference to the first and last day.

For two, the Double or Twin Room with Balcony is the uncomplicated choice: one large king-size bed, a private balcony and a city view. It gives you somewhere to sit with a drink or let the room breathe while you decide whether the legs are up to another walk through town. The balcony is for you, not for rinsing or drying diving equipment; that practical job belongs elsewhere.

If three or four people are sharing, the Duplex Room makes more sense than trying to negotiate around a standard double. Its separate levels and sofa bed give a group more room to spread out, while the Comfort Triple Room keeps things simpler for three with a double bed and a sofa bed. Family rooms are available, and children of any age are welcome; cots depend on the room chosen, while extra beds are not available.

All rooms have air conditioning and soundproofing, which is a useful combination in a town-centre location. You also get a private bathroom with a shower, hairdryer and toiletries, plus a flat-screen TV, wardrobe or dressing area and a desk. A minibar means cold water is close when you come back warm and salt-streaked. Daily housekeeping keeps the reset fairly painless.

Breakfast is a buffet served in the breakfast room, rather than a full hotel restaurant built around lunch and dinner. The timing appears in two forms: 7:30 to 11:00 in the booking details and 8:00 to 10:30 in the hotel's own information. If your dive departure is an early one, confirm the current breakfast arrangement before relying on the first coffee of the day.

There is no hotel restaurant or bar to plan around, which in this location is less of a drama than it would be in a remote resort. Restaurants are close enough to reach on foot, including Kelly's Pastry Calvi, Best of Calvi and Ô Viet, all around 100 feet away. Chez Tao is about 1,750 feet away by road if you fancy extending the evening beyond the immediate cluster.

Breakfast in your room is available, as is a minibar in the accommodation. The formula is therefore breakfast rather than half-board or all-inclusive: you start the day at the hotel and choose the rest of the menu in Calvi.

The hotel's strongest non-diving activity is its address. You can walk to the beach in five minutes, take a swim on fine sand and return without turning a simple dip into a logistical exercise. The nearby streets also give you shops, cafés and restaurants for the hours when you are happy to be on dry land but not yet ready for bed.

For a more active day, the hotel offers access to activities including kayaking, hiking and cultural excursions. Boat trips, island outings, waterfalls, markets and snorkelling are also part of the available programme, giving you options for a non-diving day or for a companion who prefers exploring above the water.

There is no need to dress the place up as a resort. You come here for Calvi on your doorstep, a balcony when you want to sit down and air conditioning when the Corsican heat has done its work. The rest of the entertainment is outside.

Check-in runs from 15:00 to 21:30 and check-out is by 11:00. Reception is open from 07:30 to 21:30; if you arrive later, contact the hotel so that your arrival can be arranged. There is no age requirement for check-in, and cash is accepted.

An airport shuttle is available as a hotel service and must be arranged with the hotel. The nearest airport is Calvi–Sainte-Catherine, around 3.4 miles away by road, while Bastia–Poretta is around 60 miles away. Free private parking is available nearby in a parking garage, with no reservation needed, which is useful if you are driving around Corsica rather than arriving by air.
