Torremare

Some hotels sell a view; here, the view is part of the address. Torremare is a six-room seaside hotel in Marine du Miomo, with the sea and Torra di Miomu appearing from the rooms and the terrace. The setting does the talking without needing a brass band.

You can settle into the outdoor terrace, take a drink at the lounge bar or head straight down towards the beach. This is a compact place rather than a sprawling resort, which suits you if your ideal evening involves food, a sea view and very little administrative effort between the last dive and dinner.

The hotel also works for a mixed travelling party. Couples can choose a sea-view room with a king-size bed, while the family room brings a sofa bed into the arrangement. Air conditioning, soundproof rooms and a private bathroom keep the practical side of the night in order.

Torremare stands on the seafront in Marine du Miomo, in the commune of Santa-Maria-di-Lota, just north of Bastia. Miomo Beach is directly beside the hotel, around 50 feet away, so reaching the water takes less time than finding the other fin strap you were certain you had packed.

Bastia is roughly 3 miles away, with its railway station around 3 miles from the hotel. Bastia-Poretta Airport is about 16 miles away by road, while Calvi–Sainte-Catherine Airport is considerably farther at around 57 miles by road. The location gives you a coastal base close to Bastia rather than an isolated address that requires a daily expedition for a coffee.

The coast offers other beaches within a short drive, including Griogione Beach at about half a mile, Lavasina Beach at around 1.2 miles and Pietranera Beach at roughly 1.6 miles. Bastia’s Sainte-Marie Cathedral and Jardin Romieu are also within reach, at around 4 and 4 miles respectively.

Every room has a sea view, and the sightline includes Torra di Miomu. That gives you something better than a generic blue rectangle outside the window: a recognisable landmark to check against the light while you decide whether the day has earned another swim. Some rooms add a balcony, so this is the detail to look for if stepping outside with your first coffee matters to you.

For two, the Standard Double Room with Sea View keeps things straightforward, with a king-size bed and the essentials close at hand. The Comfort Double Room with Sea View gives you more room to spread out, which may be welcome when dry clothes, cameras and the contents of a dive bag begin competing for the same surface. Both have an en suite bathroom, air conditioning and a refrigerator for keeping water cool.

Travelling as a family calls for a different choice. The Family Room with Sea View combines a king-size bed with a sofa bed, making better use of the room than trying to negotiate sleeping arrangements around a double bed. Wardrobe space, a dressing room and soundproofing help keep the night practical, while heating is available when the Corsican evening is less Mediterranean than the brochure would like.

The hotel’s Torremare restaurant serves dinner, with Mediterranean cooking, seasonal dishes and local specialities on the table. Local wines are there to match the regional food, which is exactly the sort of pairing that makes more sense after a day outdoors than a menu assembled from vague international crowd-pleasers.

Breakfast is available on request, so you can arrange the first meal of the day rather than assume there is a buffet waiting at dawn. Special-diet menus can also be requested, and children’s meals are available. The restaurant closes on Sunday evenings during the low season, a useful fact to keep in mind if your arrival or diving schedule lands on that particular square of the calendar.

There is one lounge bar, intended for relaxing with a drink, plus a snack bar for something less formal. The bar, terrace and restaurant keep the evening conveniently close; no taxi is required simply because you fancied a glass of wine after dinner.

Miomo Beach is the main reason to leave the terrace. Access is direct, with sun loungers and parasols available for the serious business of sitting down properly. You can move from the sea to a chair, then from the chair to the terrace, without turning recovery into an organised activity.

The hotel also has a garden, a sun terrace and outdoor seating overlooking the sea. For a couple, that creates an easy rhythm: a short coastal outing, a little time in the sun, then a drink while the light changes over Torra di Miomu. There is no need to fill every hour merely because the hotel offers somewhere to be.

If you want a change of scene, Bastia brings historic streets, Sainte-Marie Cathedral and Jardin Romieu within a short drive. The surrounding beaches also give you a few alternatives to the stretch directly outside Torremare, without turning the stay into a tour of car parks.

Free private parking is available, which is useful if you are arriving with more luggage than any airline would like to discuss.

Check-in runs from 16:00 to 20:00. Check-out starts at 07:00 and finishes in the morning, so an early departure is possible; plan around the stated 10:00 hotel departure time. Upper floors are reached by stairs only, while facilities for disabled guests are available elsewhere at the property.

Children of any age are welcome. A cot can be requested for children aged up to two, subject to the selected room arrangement, while extra beds are not available. Pets are accepted on request, and payment is by cash. Wi-Fi is free, and rooms include a refrigerator, air conditioning and a flat-screen TV for the moments when the sea has finally stopped trying to tempt you back outside.
