Plongee Libre

Located in Frontignan, Plongée Libre offers a different perspective on the Mediterranean by focusing entirely on freediving and breath-hold exploration. Rather than the heavy equipment of scuba, the centre emphasises a naturalistic approach to observing the underwater world.

The centre operates primarily across the Thau lagoon and the coastline near Sète. These waters provide a diverse range of environments, from calm lagoon habitats to the more varied seafloor of the Sète littoral, making it an ideal area for those looking to connect with marine biology.

The centre is led by Sophie Fallourd, a state-qualified instructor (DEJEPS) and breath-hold instructor (MEF1). Her expertise ensures that the sessions are grounded in both safety and a deep understanding of the local ecosystem.

Plongée Libre caters to a wide range of participants, including children, adults, families, and school groups. The teaching style is designed to be accessible to all, with a specific focus on the naturalist aspect of marine life observation.

The centre provides specialised training in breath-hold diving, including Éveil à l'apnée for beginners and personalised training programmes tailored to individual needs. The curriculum is designed to build comfort and skill in the water through a naturalist approach.

Excursions are conducted using either sailing boats or outboard motorboats, allowing for a variety of approaches to the different coastal sites. These outings are designed to facilitate easy access to the lagoon and the nearby coastline.

The Thau lagoon provides a unique habitat for observing delicate species. You can find seahorses, various sea slugs, and sea hares amongst the sponges, sea squirts, and ascidians that populate the lagoon floor.

Along the Sète coastline, the marine life becomes more varied. Divers and snorkelers can encounter octopus, cuttlefish, and sea bream, alongside crabs and other crustaceans inhabiting the seabed.

The area is also home to various sponges and other fixed life that provides structure to the underwater environment, supporting a wide array of smaller organisms.

The best period for activities is from April to October. During these months, the lagoon and coastal areas provide the most suitable conditions for the centre's naturalistic outings.
