L'Isula Rossa

A small two-star hotel with 21 rooms, L'Isula Rossa suits you if your ideal post-dive routine involves a shower, a quiet drink and an easy walk into town rather than a resort timetable. The atmosphere is straightforward: a shaded garden, sea views and a bar where you can settle in for an aperitif.

The hotel’s online information is aimed at French-speaking guests. Inside, rooms use neutral decoration, with private bathrooms, showers, toiletries and hairdryers. WiFi runs throughout the hotel, and the setting does the rest without asking you to dress up for dinner.

Couples have the simplest arrangement here, but family rooms are available too. If your travelling party includes children, children of any age are welcome, with cots and extra beds available on request.

Route du Port places you in L’Île-Rousse, on Corsica’s north-west coast, with the sea directly opposite the hotel. The town centre is about 0.3 miles away, and the port is at a similar distance, so you can reach the waterfront and local life without turning every outing into a transport exercise.

Several beaches sit close by. Nautique Beach is almost on the doorstep, Digue Beach is roughly 250 feet away, and Napoleon Beach is about 0.1 miles from the hotel. Pietra Lighthouse is around 0.5 miles away, while Parc de Saleccia lies about 2.1 miles inland.

The Ile-Rousse railway station is around 0.1 miles away, useful if you want to explore without keeping the car permanently attached to your plans. Calvi–Sainte-Catherine Airport is about 9 miles away, while Bastia–Poretta Airport is around 27 miles away.

For two people, the sea-view double room with balcony is the obvious choice if the outlook matters as much as the bed. It gives you a private outdoor corner and puts the coastline into the room rather than leaving it for the walk to breakfast. The superior double room is the more generous option for a couple who would rather have room to spread out at the end of the day.

Travelling as three or four? The sea-view triple room gives three guests the coastal outlook, while the mountain-view quadruple room offers more sleeping capacity. The economy triple and quadruple rooms sit between garden level and basement, which is worth keeping in mind if daylight and a higher position are priorities. They are practical choices for a group, not the ones to select for the view.

Air conditioning is available in some rooms, while all rooms have WiFi and an LCD television. A private balcony is also available in some categories. For a diver returning warm, salty and ready to collapse, that makes the room choice more than a matter of bed names: check the category carefully if air conditioning, a balcony or the view will decide the quality of your night.

Breakfast is a continental buffet served from 7.30am to 10am. On warm days, you can take it into the garden; when the heat is less cooperative, the air-conditioned dining room faces the sea. That gives you two useful starts to the day: outside with the morning air, or inside with a cooler room before you head out.

There is one bar on site. It focuses on cocktails and works equally well for an aperitif or a slower drink while you look out towards the sea. No complicated resort choreography is required; the bar is simply there when the day’s main achievement has been getting back from the water.

For a proper evening meal, the immediate area gives you options beyond the hotel. Via Mare is about 100 feet away, L’Escale Cote Port around 250 feet, and Aux Vents d’Anges Bollaccia Île-Rousse roughly 650 feet. Café-Bar: le Central is about 0.4 miles away when the drink needs to happen elsewhere.

The shaded garden and terrace are the useful kind of facilities: somewhere to sit, cool down and let the day leave your shoulders. Sea views come with both the garden setting and the breakfast room, while the coastline is directly opposite for a quick walk when sitting still becomes too ambitious.

If you want to do more than move between bed, breakfast and bar, the activity choice reaches beyond diving. Sailing, jet-skiing, fishing, boat trips and equipment hire are available, with island outings, waterfall trips, market visits and snorkelling among the excursions. These are the sort of alternatives that work well on a non-dive day, or for a travelling companion who prefers a boat trip to a second immersion.

On land, the possibilities include golf, cycling, hiking and cultural excursions. Codole Lake is around 3.6 miles away, and the nearby beaches make a short, uncomplicated escape possible when a full excursion feels like too much effort.

Arrival is possible between 2pm and 8pm, with departure between 8.30am and 11am. If your travel plans run outside those windows, this is something to settle before setting off rather than discovering it with luggage in hand.

Private parking is available on site, and luggage storage is available when your room and your travel timetable refuse to line up neatly. Pets are accepted on request. Payment can be made in cash, Visa or Mastercard.
