The sea is the first thing you meet here: beyond the pine garden and the chocolate-coloured Coderch building, the water sits just below the hotel.

The invitation

Adults only from the age of 15, with the Mediterranean in front of you and the architecture doing rather more work than the usual resort façade. Hotel de Mar Gran Meliá occupies a seafront building designed by Spanish architect José Antonio Coderch, opened in 1964 and renovated in 2008.

The mood is polished but not noisy about it. You have a pine garden, terraces, a private beach and a spa by Clarins & myBlend, while the adults-only policy keeps the setting aimed at grown-up breaks rather than family logistics. It suits you if the day should move from sea air to a proper meal, a treatment or a quiet drink without leaving the property.

The point on the map

The hotel stands at Paseo de las Illetas, 7, in Illetas, within the municipality of Calvia, Mallorca. It is right on the seafront, with direct access to a private beach equipped with sun loungers and parasols. The sea is about 350 feet away, so this is genuinely a waterside base rather than a hotel that borrows the word from its brochure.

Palma city centre is about 3.1 miles away. Puerto Portals is roughly 2.5 miles from the hotel, while Bellver Castle is about 4.7 miles away. Real Golf Bendinat and Illetas Beach are both within a short drive, which gives you a choice between staying put, heading into town or adding a round of golf to the itinerary.

The rooms, and the nights

Sea views are the common thread, whether you choose a double or twin arrangement, a connected room for up to four guests, or one of the junior and larger suites. For two people, the double rooms keep things straightforward; twin rooms make more sense when sharing with a dive buddy and keeping the sleeping arrangements strictly practical. The connected quadruple option is the useful one for a small group, giving four guests a room configuration designed for staying together.

Every room is air-conditioned, with a private bathroom, minibar, espresso machine, balcony, flat-screen television and free Wi-Fi. Separate bath and shower facilities are available, along with a rainfall showerhead and toiletries. The soundproofing matters when your alarm is set for an early departure, while room service runs around the clock for the evenings when changing out of wet kit and going back out feels like unnecessary exertion.

The suites add a more generous sense of space and include details such as a safe, telephone, towels and toiletries. Premium rooms and suites also come with different added-value arrangements connected to the Spa by Clarins, while some suite categories include airport transfers and parking. Check the exact inclusions attached to the room you choose; the cards below already cover the dimensions, capacity and bed layout.

The taste of the place

Arrels is the address for Majorcan cooking, built around traditional island flavours with modern touches. Chef Marga Coll’s approach is described as ‘from the market to the table’, which is a more useful clue than simply calling the menu local. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served here.

Bombon Pool Club by Alberta Ferretti takes the Mediterranean route, with Italian design and a sea-facing setting, and also covers breakfast, lunch and dinner. Entre Mar concentrates on breakfast, including a buffet served daily from 7.30am to 11am. There is also Riva Lounge, an open-air terrace inspired by Riva yachts, with an Italian character and a cocktail focus.

For the rest of the day, the hotel has a café, a pool bar and two further bars or lounges. Twenty-four-hour room service gives you a quieter fallback when appetite wins but socialising loses. Meal arrangements vary by booking, so check whether breakfast or other meals are included before you reserve.

Do something, or do nothing

Two outdoor pools, a private beach and a sun terrace give you several ways to spend an afternoon without turning it into a project. Sun loungers and parasols are available on the beach, while the garden and outdoor furniture provide somewhere to sit when full sun has done enough for one day.

The Spa by Clarins & myBlend offers massages, facials and a hammam, with sauna and spa-bath facilities also available. A 24-hour gym covers cardio, toning and weight training, useful if you would rather loosen stiff legs than lie completely still. The spa has its own age rules: guests under 16 are not permitted there, and supervised access applies in the relevant areas.

When you want to leave the property, the hotel can assist with excursions including boat trips, island visits, waterfalls, markets and snorkelling. There is also a library, and golf is available in the surrounding area. Nothing here requires a timetable-heavy holiday; the point is that you can fill an afternoon without needing another transfer.

What to know before booking

Palma airport is about 12.4 miles away. An airport transfer service is available, and the hotel also offers shuttle services; arrange the transfer with the hotel before travelling. Parking is available on site, and vehicle hire can be arranged. A concierge, luggage storage, ticket assistance and excursion assistance cover the small administrative jobs that otherwise eat into a holiday.

Check-in starts at 3pm and check-out is by midday. The reception operates around the clock, while early arrival and late departure can be arranged on request. Free Wi-Fi runs throughout the hotel, and an on-site infirmary is available. Lifts, accessibility facilities, a currency exchange service, laundry and dry-cleaning services are also part of the practical setup.

The property is adults only from age 15, and only registered guests are permitted in the guest rooms. Connecting rooms can be requested, subject to availability. Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Diners Club are accepted.
