Pension Anapa Lodge Moorea is a family-run guest house in which the practical comforts do most of the talking: a garden, an outdoor swimming pool, terraces and accommodation designed for couples, families or friends travelling together. You get a private entrance, air conditioning, a fan, a kitchenette and a terrace, so the return from a day out does not require a formal plan. The overall setup is domestic rather than grand-hotel polished, with a coffee house, bar, games room, picnic spaces and outdoor seating giving you several places to settle without turning the property into a full-scale resort.

You stay in Vaianae, in the Haapiti area of south-west Moorea, at PK 20.3. The lodge sits on the side of the island described as the more authentic one, between lagoon and mountain. It is around 20 minutes by car from the ferry, which matters when you arrive with luggage, dive bags and the usual collection of things that seemed essential when packing.

The nearest beach is around 10 minutes away. For food beyond the lodge, Poissonnerie Snack Moorea Seafood is about 1.8 miles away by car, while Pizza Daniel is about 3.8 miles away. Restaurant te Honu Iti is further around the island, at about 17 miles by car. Moorea Airport is roughly 12 miles away, with a drive of around 22 minutes; Tahiti International Airport is reached via a much longer journey involving the island transfer.

The accommodation works particularly well when you want more than a bed and a bathroom. Every unit has a terrace, kitchenette, air conditioning, hot shower, comfortable bedding and a smart TV, with a private entrance and ground-floor access. The kitchenette includes a refrigerator, microwave, oven, kettle, cookware and a dining table. That is useful when you return hungry, when island restaurant timings do not match your own, or when you simply want to keep drinks and breakfast supplies close at hand.

For two, the Double Room or Twin Room gives you a straightforward base with a king-size bed, private bathroom and space to sit outside. The Family Bungalow is the more flexible choice for a small group, with separate sleeping arrangements and room to spread out rather than conducting nightly negotiations over who gets which corner. Views vary between mountain, pool and garden, so check the category carefully if the view is part of your decision.

The bedrooms include linen, a wardrobe or closet, a drying rack for clothing and a socket near the bed. The combination of air conditioning and ceiling fan gives you options after a hot day, while the terrace offers somewhere to sit before sleep or while the rest of the party is still awake. A flat-screen TV with streaming services is there for the evenings when everyone has had enough scenery for one day.

Breakfast is continental and homemade, with local fruit and vegetables, homemade jams, homemade bread and a choice of sweet or savoury food. It is the sort of start that can be taken seriously before a long day out, particularly if you prefer something more substantial than coffee and a packaged biscuit.

There is one bar, alongside a coffee house and snack bar. The bar is set up as a sociable place for cocktails and a drink at the end of the day, while the snack bar and room service keep things simpler when you would rather stay put. Wine and champagne are available, and special-diet menus can be arranged; children’s meals are also available.

Outdoor dining, a dining area, picnic spots and barbecue facilities give you different ways to handle the evening. You can sit down to breakfast, order something to your room, or use the kitchenette and barbecue when you want control over the timing. That flexibility is welcome on an island, where an appetite does not always wait politely for dinner service.

The outdoor pool is the obvious place to cool down, with sun loungers, beach chairs and umbrellas around it. There is also an open-air bath, a sun terrace and a garden, so you can choose between getting properly horizontal and making the effort to move as far as a shaded seat. After a day of swimming, walking or exploring, that is often quite enough ambition.

The games room, board games and puzzles give you something to do when the weather turns or when conversation needs a little mechanical assistance. An outdoor fireplace, patio and picnic area make the grounds useful beyond the pool itself, particularly for an unhurried evening with friends or family.

The lodge can arrange or support excursions including boat trips, island outings, waterfalls, markets and snorkelling, as well as local-culture tours. Walking tours, hiking, cycling and fishing are available nearby, with bicycle hire and bike tours also offered. The nearest golf course, Moorea Green Pearl Golf Course, is about 14 miles away.

Check-in runs from 14:00 to 18:00 and check-out from 07:00 to 10:00. Private and express check-in and check-out are available, alongside concierge service and room service. WiFi covers the property, and private parking is available on site, which is handy if you are touring Moorea by car rather than treating the island as a single beach with a few excursions attached.

The lodge is around 20 minutes from the ferry by car and roughly 12 miles from Moorea Airport. From the ferry, take the road towards Haapiti, continue past Maatea, and follow the route after the landmark sculpture described by the lodge; the entrance comes shortly afterwards. Airport transfer arrangements should be made directly with the property if you want the arrival logistics organised before landing.

Children of any age are welcome, and a cot can be requested for children aged from birth to three years. Laundry is available, and the accommodation accepts cash as well as Visa, Mastercard, American Express, PayPal and bank transfer. Smoking and parties are not permitted, and pets are not allowed.
