Vaiare Gauche, Moorea: deep reef plateau and shark activity

Vaiare Gauche is a significant part of the Vaiare pass reef system located on the eastern side of Moorea, situated directly in front of the ferry docks. Unlike the steep vertical walls found elsewhere in the archipelago, this site is defined by an expansive reef plateau that slopes gently toward the depths. You will find a diverse landscape of healthy coral gardens interspersed with sandy patches and natural channels. This topography provides a wide area for exploration as the reef descends toward a maximum depth of 30 metres.

The site's orientation and position within the pass make it much more dynamic than the sheltered lagoon dives found closer to the shore. Because it sits near a main transit point for water moving through the island, you can expect regular moderate currents. These currents are driven by the tidal flow through the pass and can vary depending on the tide and local swell. The depth profile typically settles between 25 and 30 metres, where the most significant coral formations reside. The presence of these sharks is a hallmark of the site, driven by the nutrient-rich water moving through the pass. Watching these predators navigate the current near the reef edge is a core part of the experience here.

In addition to the sharks, the site supports a dense population of schooling fish that respond to the tidal movement. You can expect to see large groups of jackfish and barracuda moving through the water column. The reef itself is home to various resident species, including bluestripe snappers and titan triggerfish (Balistes tamativus) patrolling the coral heads. These species, along with various stingrays and green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas), create a busy and active underwater environment.

The habitat also includes specific niches for more stationary marine life, such as hawksbill sea turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) and various reef fish. The mix of sandy patches and hard coral structures provides plenty of cover for these animals to move in and out of. This structural complexity, combined with the high turnover of water, ensures that the site remains highly productive. It is a site where the biology of the reef and the movement of the ocean meet.

Because of its location and depth, Vaiare Gauche requires a higher level of proficiency than typical lagoon dives. You must be comfortable with depths reaching 30 metres and capable of managing moderate currents while observing the marine life. The site is best approached via a boat dive, typically involving a controlled descent onto the reef plateau. It is a rewarding destination for divers who seek out the more energetic side of Moorea's marine ecosystem.
