Far Garden sits approximately one kilometre north of Naama Bay, establishing itself as the outermost of Sharm El Sheikh's famed 'gardens.' Its position offers a degree of shelter from prevailing winds and waves, making for generally calm surface conditions above a dynamic underwater landscape. This reef is characterised by a diverse topography, beginning with a gently sloping sandy expanse that transitions into a dramatic vertical wall, providing a varied dive profile for exploration.
Your dive at Far Garden begins over a sandy slope, a canvas for numerous coral pinnacles that punctuate the seabed. These vibrant structures are alive with activity, drawing your eye down towards the deeper sections of the reef. As you descend, the slope carries you gradually until approximately 25 metres, where the geology shifts dramatically, giving way to a sheer, abrupt wall that plunges into the depths.
Following the contours of the reef towards its corner, you'll discover a distinct cave opening at a shallow depth of five metres. This natural sanctuary offers a unique environment to explore, often sheltering a large school of glassfish (Ambassis miops). Observing their shimmering collective movements within the shadowed interior of the cave provides a moment of focus amidst the broader reef exploration, highlighting the intricacies of this specific habitat.
The inherent currents at Far Garden, particularly around its prominent cape, define the experience and open up possibilities for excellent drift diving. These currents can be significant, offering movement that dictates whether you proceed in one direction or another along the reef. This characteristic makes Far Garden a site where planning your entry and exit points is key, ensuring a safe and exhilarating ride along the vibrant drop-off.
Given its exposed position and the influence of strong currents, Far Garden serves as a natural magnet for pelagic species. While specific details on their behaviour here are left to the moment of encounter, the site's reputation for attracting these larger visitors adds an element of anticipation to every dive. The blend of sheltered reef, deep wall, and oceanic currents creates an environment conducive to encounters with marine life beyond the typical reef residents.
The extensive coral formations and the dynamic environment contribute to a rich ecosystem that supports the schools of glassfish (Ambassis miops) found within the cave. Beyond these, the general health of the reef and the availability of open water conditions make it a prime location to observe various pelagic organisms as they navigate the currents. This combination of macro and wide-angle photographic opportunities underscores the site's diverse offerings.
Far Garden is accessible to divers with a DIVER LEVEL 2 certification. Maximum dive depth for this site is 25 metres. Be prepared for strong currents, particularly around the cape, as this site is well-known for its challenging conditions, often favouring a drift dive approach.
