Abu Sail, Marsa Alam: Exploring Red Sea Coral Gardens

Your dive at Abu Sail begins with an unusual and memorable entry directly from the beach. You'll navigate a small opening above the reef's surface, leading into a brief, buoyant drift through a narrow cave. This gentle, almost subterranean passage sets an immediate tone of exploration, transitioning from the sunlit surface to the subaquatic world, a unique prelude before you emerge on the other side of the reef, ready to choose your direction.

Once through the cavern, the reef splits, offering two distinct paths. To the south, the deep zone beckons, presenting an impressive spectacle of a massive block completely covered in mushroom-shaped soft corals. This vibrant, living sculpture provides a home for an abundance of marine life, with the ecosystems here thriving from 20 meters down to beyond 40 meters, where the topography continues to unfold for those qualified to explore.

The northern side of Abu Sail contrasts with the southern deep, revealing what many consider one of the region's most beautiful coral gardens. Here, the concentration of both soft and hard corals creates a kaleidoscope of colour and texture. The shallow depths of this area allow sunlight to penetrate, illuminating the intricate structures and fostering an environment where a high density of reef creatures congregates.

As you traverse the northern gardens, keep your eyes peeled for the well-camouflaged scorpionfish and stonefish, masters of disguise waiting patiently on the reef. Bannerfish (Heniochus intermedius) school gracefully, while pufferfish (Arothron hispidus) glide past. You’ll also encounter the striking redmouth groupers (Aethaloperca rogaa) and various angelfish (Pomacanthidae), adding splashes of vibrant colour to the scene.

The reef's inhabitants also include the distinctive crocodilefish (Cymbacephalus beauforti), often resting flat against the seabed, perfectly blending with their surroundings. Blue-spotted stingrays (Neotrygon kuhlii) can be seen moving gracefully across the sandy patches or nestled under coral formations. Look closer at the busy cleaning stations, where smaller fish attend to larger ones, a constant ballet of symbiotic relationships playing out before you.

Beyond the general reef inhabitants, Abu Sail offers the exciting possibility of encountering pelagic visitors. While not guaranteed, there's a chance you might spot a reef shark (Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos) cruising along the perimeter of the reef or making a pass through the deeper sections, an always-thrilling moment for any diver. These encounters add an extra layer of anticipation to each dive here.
