Shutterfish Scuba Diving has been operating out of Cancun since 2017, bringing a focus on underwater photography and the unique ecosystems of the Mexican Caribbean. Based in the Marina Sotavento on Kukulcan Boulevard, the centre provides access to a diverse array of environments, from the sheltered reefs of the bay to the deep, current-swept offshore sites.

The centre operates with a professional team of instructors dedicated to a lifestyle of diving rather than just a service. They maintain a strict diver-to-guide ratio, ensuring that no more than four divers are assigned to a single guide during excursions.

Beyond standard recreational diving, the team possesses a strong interest in the natural world and the art of imaging. They offer specialised guidance for those looking to improve their underwater photography and video skills, making them a natural choice for divers wanting to document their trips.

The centre is an SDI affiliated facility, offering a comprehensive curriculum from entry-level to professional grades. You can train for your Open Water Diver, Advanced Open Water Diver, and Rescue Diver certifications, or progress toward becoming a Divemaster.

Specialised training is also available to refine your skills, including Nitrox, Deep Diver, Wreck Diver, and Peak Performance Buoyancy. For those interested in the more technical or scientific aspects of the sport, they offer courses in Search & Recovery, Underwater Naturalist, and Dive Against Debris.

A full range of rental equipment is available on-site for those not travelling with their own kit. This includes regulators, BCDs, wetsuits, and fins to ensure you are fully equipped for the local conditions.

For those who prefer to use their own gear, the centre offers a discount for cenote diving and Divemaster training when you bring your own BCD, regulator, and wetsuit.

The reefs around Cancun are home to a variety of resident species, including groupers, cobias, and great barracuda. You will often find diverse coral formations providing a backdrop for these larger inhabitants.

Seasonal visitors add variety to the local marine life, with eagle rays appearing between October and March. If you visit in late autumn, you may also encounter manta rays at the offshore seamounts.

The macro and smaller life include various crustaceans and reef inhabitants that thrive among the corals and sponges.

Divers should be prepared for varying conditions depending on the site. While the reefs in the bay are generally more sheltered, the offshore sites like The Manta Valley are subject to strong currents.

Shipwreck dives in the Cancun area can also involve common currents that require confident buoyancy and navigation. The wrecks of C58 and C55 are particularly suited to those comfortable with drift or navigation diving.
