Fang Ming Wreck about the site

Diving the Fang Ming Wreck takes you into a unique underwater landscape where human engineering meets natural marine colonization. The site comprises two impressive Chinese metal ships, the 56-meter Fang Ming and the smaller 36-meter Lapas03, which were intentionally sunk near Isla Ballena in 1999 to create an artificial reef. As you descend, the profiles of these vessels become clearer at 21 metres, their structures providing an immediate sense of scale and history beneath the surface of the Sea of Cortez.

The Fang Ming, being the larger of the two, presents itself as the primary attraction, its length allowing for extensive exploration. Throughout the wreck, you'll discover various entry points for penetration, inviting you to navigate through its corridors and cargo holds. These interior spaces offer a different kind of dive, where natural light filters in from above, revealing the intricate details of the ship's former life and the marine growth that has transformed it into a new habitat.

As you move around the exterior and through the interior of the Fang Ming, you'll notice how life has firmly taken hold. The metal surfaces, once industrial and bare, are now encrusted with vibrant marine organisms, forming a complex ecosystem. This transformation truly highlights the success of artificial reefs in providing new homes and feeding grounds for a diverse range of species, making every corner of the wreck a potential discovery for the observant diver.

The presence of the second vessel, the Lapas03, adds another layer to the dive, offering a complete wreck system to explore within a single dive profile. These two wrecks, now intertwined with the ecosystem, provide abundant marine life from the moment you approach. The careful planning involved in their sinking has created a stable environment, allowing for significant biodiversity to flourish across their structures.
