La Reyna Dive Site: Gorgonians and Mantas of the Sea of Cortez

Diving La Reyna, you approach a prominent rocky islet crowned with a lighthouse, marking its position as a beacon for marine life beneath. The reef here extends down to a maximum depth of 25 metres, creating a habitat rich in biodiversity. As you descend, the rugged topography reveals itself, formed by ancient rock formations providing countless nooks and crannies for smaller reef inhabitants, while its exposed location promises encounters with larger pelagic species.

The reef at La Reyna is a vibrant tapestry, densely populated with colourful gorgonians swaying gently in the subtle currents, alongside impressive brain corals that create miniature cities for reef fish. You'll find yourself gliding past schools of tropical fish, their iridescent scales flashing in the filtered sunlight, creating a dynamic underwater landscape. This abundant reef life forms the base of the food chain, drawing in a diverse array of predators and larger marine animals.

Keep a keen eye on the crevices and under ledges, as La Reyna is home to a fascinating array of moray eels. You are likely to spot green morays (Gymnothorax funebris), their sleek bodies often peeking out from their rocky shelters, alongside the distinctive banded patterns of zebra morays (Gymnothorax zebra) and the intricate spots of jeweled morays (Muraena lentiginosa). These territorial residents add a compelling element to the reef exploration, often observed by patient divers.

What truly sets La Reyna apart for many divers is the consistent opportunity to encounter giant Pacific manta rays (Manta birostris). These majestic creatures, with wingspans that can exceed several metres, frequent the site, often cruising gracefully through the water column.
