Capt. Slate's Scuba Adventures

Located in Tavernier, between the hubs of Key Largo and Islamorada, Captain Slate's Scuba Adventures has been a fixture of the Florida Keys diving scene since 1978. The centre is positioned for easy access from both Miami and Key West, making it a practical base for divers exploring the reef systems and historical wrecks of the Atlantic.

The centre operates with a focus on safety and professional standards, maintaining a 100% safety record over more than four decades of operation. As a PADI affiliated centre, they provide a structured environment for both recreational divers and those pursuing professional paths.

The team is known for a professional and friendly approach, catering to a wide range of divers. They offer flexible course scheduling to suit different itineraries, ensuring that whether you are a novice or a professional, the instruction is tailored to your specific needs.

The training programme is comprehensive, covering the full spectrum of PADI certifications. Beginners can start with the Discover Scuba / Resort Course or work through to their Open Water Diver qualification. Advanced divers can further their skills with the Advanced Open Water, Deep Diver, Navigation, and Wreck specialties.

For those looking to progress professionally, the centre offers Rescue Diver and Divemaster training. They also provide specialised instruction in Underwater Photography and Night Diver courses, alongside Nitrox / Enriched Air certification to help you manage your gas more efficiently.

The centre provides full equipment hire for those not travelling with their own kit. This includes everything required for a complete dive setup, ensuring you can arrive without heavy luggage.

Nitrox is available on-site, allowing divers to extend their bottom time on multi-dive days. This is particularly useful when exploring the deeper wrecks or managing nitrogen loading during busy reef sessions.

The local waters are famous for the 'Creature Feature' encounters, where you can find significant marine life. You will regularly encounter large species such as Goliath grouper (Epinephelus itajara), sharks, and various species of moray eel (Muraenidae).

Reef residents include a vibrant array of colorful fish, such as angelfish (Pomacanthidae), parrotfish (Calotomus), and filefish (Monocanthidae). Large schools of reef fish, including snapper (Lutjanus), grunts, and jacks (Carangidae), move through the water, often accompanied by sea turtles (Cheloniidae).

On the sandy bottom and near the reef structure, look for southern stingrays (Hypanus americanus), spotted eagle rays (Aetobatus), and various species of lobster (Homaridae). You may also spot sponges (Porifera), corals, and royal conchs navigating the reef flat.

Macro life and smaller inhabitants are abundant, including various species of shrimp (Caridea), crabs (Brachyura), and gobies (Gobiidae). The ecosystem is supported by a diverse range of smaller reef fish and invertebrates that thrive in the crevices of the coral.

The best time to visit the area is during the high season from December to April. During this period, the diving environment is generally most favourable for exploring the reefs and wrecks of the Keys.
