Located at 51 Shoreland Drive in Key Largo, Ocean First provides a structured approach to diving that bridges the gap between technical skill and marine conservation. Established in 2016, the centre operates with a dual focus on high-quality SSI instruction and active ocean research through its non-profit Ocean First Institute.

While the headquarters are based in Boulder, Colorado, the Key Largo site serves as the primary hub for Florida reef diving. The centre is designed to support divers through every stage of their journey, from initial pool sessions to advanced professional training.

The team is composed of experienced SSI instructors who prioritise both diving proficiency and marine ecology. Their teaching philosophy is rooted in the centre's B-Corp certification, ensuring that environmental responsibility is integrated into how they manage their operations and interact with the local ecosystem.

Beyond standard scuba instruction, the staff supports a wide range of educational programmes, including marine science projects and youth camps. This academic approach makes the centre a suitable choice for those looking to understand the science behind the reefs they explore.

Ocean First offers a comprehensive catalogue of SSI courses catering to all experience levels. Beginners can start with the Open Water Diver course, while those looking to progress can enrol in specialties such as Deep Diver, Navigation, and Perfect Buoyancy.

For professional aspirants, the centre provides a pathway through Divemaster and Assistant Instructor Trainer programmes, including the Instructor Development Course (IDC). They also offer specialised training in Dry Suit diving and Freediving, as well as Mermaid Instructor qualifications.

The shore-based facility is well-equipped for both training and recreational diving. A standout feature is the private, heated indoor pool maintained at 31.6°C (89°F), which provides an ideal environment for mastering buoyancy or practicing skills before entering the ocean.

On-site amenities include private changing rooms and classrooms for theory work. Nitrox is available for divers looking to extend their bottom times on the reef.

The local reefs are home to a diverse array of large pelagics and reef inhabitants. You can expect to encounter various shark species, including Caribbean reef sharks, Reef sharks (Carcharhinus), and the occasional bull shark. Large groupers (Epinephelus itajara), such as the Goliath grouper, are often found stationed near ledges and structures.

In the water column and along the reef, you will see schools of snapper (Lutjanus), various species of Jack (Carangidae), and Amberjack (Seriola). Spotted eagle rays and Southern stingrays (Hypanus americanus) are also common residents of the sandy patches and reef flats.

The reef architecture is supported by a vibrant community of invertebrates and smaller fish. Look for Spiny lobster (Palinuridae), various crabs (Brachyura), and colourful fish including Angelfish (Pomacanthidae), Butterflyfish (Chaetodon), and Parrotfish (Calotomus). You may also spot various species of sea turtles, such as the Hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) and the Loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta).

Divers should be prepared for varying conditions depending on the specific site, particularly when visiting locations known for drift diving or strong currents. The Key Largo area offers a variety of environments ranging from protected reef flats to more exposed sites.
