Pickles Reef, Key Largo: Coral Towers and Civils War Barrels

Pickles Reef sits as a prominent, yet accessible, coral formation in the Key Largo area. This is a multi-layered site, shallow enough in its northern sections for snorkelers to appreciate well-formed corals, while the southern areas offer structure down to 18 metres. It's a reef frequently used for two-tank dives due to its varied topography and the consistent conditions that make it an accommodating dive for different experience levels.

The reef gets its name from cement-filled pickle barrels, intentionally sunk during the Civil War. These aren't just historical curiosities; they now serve as substrates for some of the Florida Keys' largest and healthiest pillar corals. Exploring the reef, you'll find these unique formations alongside vibrant new growth, offering both a historical context and a living, thriving ecosystem.

Topographically, Pickles Reef is characterized by distinct coral towers and sandy breaches. These structures create numerous ledges and crevices, providing shelter for a variety of juvenile and tropical fish species. As you navigate these formations, pay attention to the smaller details within the reef, as these protected areas are active nurseries.

Expect to encounter a range of reef inhabitants here. Hogfish and Angelfish are commonly seen, alongside schools of Schoolmaster Snapper. Look closely within the coral structures for various reef fish, and keep an eye out for conchs moving across the sand. The purple gorgonians swaying with the gentle surge add color to the landscape, and lobsters are often found tucked into their hiding spots.

The site offers a diverse profile, allowing for exploration across different depth zones. While some areas are quite shallow, averaging around 5 to 8 metres, the reef extends deeper, reaching down to 18 metres. This depth range contributes to its appeal, as it provides a longer bottom time for divers wanting to explore the more intricate sections of the reef layout.
