Salamangka Resort

The name Salamangka means “magic” in the local dialect, and the resort leans into Siquijor’s reputation for natural healing, folklore and island life without abandoning practical comforts. You stay in a 21-room resort on the coast of San Juan, with sea or garden views, air-conditioned rooms and the beach directly outside.

English, French and German are spoken by the hotel team. That matters when you are arranging meals, a transfer or a late arrival rather than trying to conduct the whole holiday through enthusiastic hand gestures.

The mood is easy to read: sea views, a pool overlooking the water, a spa, a restaurant on site and places to sit with a drink. You can spend the evening by the pool, in the lounge or on the sand, depending on how much conversation your legs are prepared to manage.

You are in San Juan, on Siquijor in the Philippines, on the island’s southern coast. Salamangka Beach is directly accessible from the resort, with white sand and a shoreline used for sunrise views. Gold View Beach is about 0.4 miles away, while Islandia Beach is around 1.3 miles away.

The setting is coastal rather than town-centred, so the resort’s own restaurant and bars will do much of the evening work. If you want to eat elsewhere, On the Rocks Cafe is about 0.8 miles away, U.Story Guest House Bar-Restaurant around 1.9 miles away, and Fuego Cantina & Grill about 3 miles away.

For a change of scenery, Lugnason Falls is about 3.8 miles away and Capilay Spring Park around 5 miles away. Tubod Beach is roughly 3 miles from the resort, and Maite Beach about 4.1 miles. The island is reached by domestic flight and ferry connections; a common route runs via Dumaguete or Cebu before the ferry to Siquijor.

The room choice comes down to the view and the amount of space you want around yourself. The sea-view suites are the natural fit if opening the door to the horizon matters more than keeping the room simple. The larger suites work for families or for anyone who prefers not to stack dive bags, clothes and the rest of life into one narrow corner.

For two people travelling on a tighter footprint, the garden-view rooms keep things straightforward. You can choose between twin beds or a large king-size bed, depending on whether you are sharing the room or merely sharing the island. The garden outlook trades the sea view for a more sheltered view of the grounds.

Air conditioning is useful in a warm, salt-heavy climate, particularly when the day has included time in a wetsuit. Rooms have a private bathroom, wardrobe, terrace or balcony, a refrigerator and an electric kettle with tea and coffee-making facilities. A flat-screen TV and free WiFi are there for the evening when the outside world can wait until tomorrow.

The Main Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner in an air-conditioned interior with vaulted ceilings, large windows and a terrace-facing setting. The cooking combines international dishes with traditional Filipino flavours, using fresh, local and organic ingredients where possible. Kinilaw gives the menu a distinctly local direction rather than leaving you with the usual anonymous resort fare.

Breakfast is à la carte, with continental and Asian choices. Lunch and dinner include vegetarian and vegan options, and special-diet menus can be arranged. Room service follows the restaurant’s opening hours, which is handy when the sensible plan is food first, conversation later.

There are two bars. The Pool Bar serves signature cocktails, mocktails, wine and cigars, with a swim-up section and daily opening from 07:00 to 22:00. The Bar Lounge Area is indoors, with spirits, beer and wine for the more traditional post-dive debrief. Live music and a happy hour add some activity to the evening without requiring you to leave the property.

The sea-facing infinity pool is the obvious place to stop moving for a while. Its swim-up bar means you can order a cold drink without making the difficult journey to a chair, while the sun terrace, loungers, umbrellas and garden provide alternatives when you have had enough of being in the water.

The spa offers massages, facials, body treatments, manicures, pedicures and traditional Filipino healing treatments. A foot bath, spa facilities and a relaxation area add useful options when your shoulders have been carrying more equipment than usual. There is also a fitness room with strength and cardio equipment, plus a jogging trail for those who prefer exercise to be self-inflicted and outdoors.

Away from the pool and spa, the resort provides snorkelling, on-site water-sport facilities and boat excursions. The tour desk can help with island visits, including Lugnason Falls, Cambugahay Falls, Cantabon Cave, Balete Tree, Guiwanon Spring Park, Paliton Beach, Salagdoong Beach, Kagusuan Beach and Olang Art Park.

Families have a Kids’ Club, outdoor play equipment and babysitting. Children can take part in painting, drawing and games under staff supervision, leaving adults time for the pool, the spa or a meal that does not need to be eaten at playground speed.

Siquijor Airport is about 9 miles away. Sibulan Airport is around 26 miles away, with the journey taking about 2 hours and 47 minutes by car; the route also involves the wider Dumaguete connection. The resort provides an airport shuttle on request, and transfers should be arranged directly with the hotel. Reaching the island involves a flight and ferry connection.

Check-in runs from 14:00 to 23:00, and check-out from 05:00 to 11:00. You need photo identification and a credit card at check-in, and the hotel needs your expected arrival time in advance. Private and express check-in and check-out are available, alongside luggage storage and a 24-hour front desk.

Free private parking is available on site, and WiFi is free throughout the property. Daily housekeeping, laundry, dry cleaning and ironing services are available, while packed lunches can be arranged for an outing. Children of any age are welcome; extra beds are available for children aged four and over on request, subject to the selected accommodation. The resort does not accept pets or parties and events.

Solar panels are part of the resort’s energy set-up. Salamangka also works to reduce single-use plastic by removing plastic water bottles and giving each guest a reusable aluminium bottle instead.

The kitchen supports local farmers by using fresh ingredients that are available locally. It is a modest, practical link between what arrives on your plate and the island around you.
