Loh Samah Bay Diving: Koh Phi Phi's beginner-friendly gorge

Loh Samah Bay lies on the southern side of Koh Phi Phi, situated just behind the famous Maya Bay. This site is naturally sheltered, creating calm conditions that make it an accommodating dive for a wide range of experience levels. Your entry typically places you over a vibrant reef structure that gently slopes towards a sandy bottom, providing excellent orientation and a gradual introduction to the bay's marine environment. The topography transitions from living reef patches to open sand, offering distinct habitats within a single dive.

The true highlight of Loh Samah Bay is the distinctive gorge located on its eastern side, a natural cleft in the rock that begins around 15 to 20 metres. Here, you can navigate through natural swim-throughs, an experience offering a sense of exploration and discovery without demanding advanced skills. The light filters through the opening, illuminating the rock faces and providing a dramatic backdrop as you move through this unique geological formation. Keep an eye out for the smaller creatures that often seek refuge within these sheltered crevices.

The reef at Loh Samah is also home to a healthy population of damselfish, their territories fiercely guarded. Surgeonfish, with their sleek forms, glide gracefully over the corals, often in small groups. Triggerfish are more solitary, patrolling their specific areas with a distinctive swimming motion. Anemonefish (clownfish) can be reliably found nested within various types of sea anemones dotted across the bay, their vibrant colours standing out against their host's tentacles. Observing their symbiotic relationship is a peaceful experience, and always a crowd-pleaser.

Below the lively reef, the sandy bottom holds its own ecosystem. Barrel sponges are a notable feature here, offering structure and shelter. Take your time to really look around their bases and within the surrounding sand, as this is where you might spot small, cryptic critters blending into their surroundings. More overtly, you have a good chance of encountering stingrays (Dasyatis pastinaca) partially buried in the sand, or gliding gracefully across it. Their stealthy movements mean you need to approach with caution and respect.

Loh Samah Bay is also a known habitat for hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata). These elegant reptiles are often seen foraging along the reef, their ancient eyes scanning for food amongst the corals. A gentle approach allows for prolonged observation, and their presence underscores the health of this thriving bay.
