Phi Leh Wall, Koh Phi Phi: Discovering Southern Thailand's Marine Life

Diving Phi Leh Wall begins with a descent onto a vibrant, sloping reef system located just south of the majestic Phi Leh Bay. As you drop below the surface, the wall unfolds before you, a canvas painted with a rich tapestry of marine life. This isn't a sheer, vertical drop but a gentle incline, offering a comfortable profile that caters to a relaxed exploration of its diverse ecosystems. The topography is punctuated by several discrete pinnacles rising from the slope, creating additional nooks and crannies for cryptic creatures to hide.

The most striking feature of Phi Leh Wall is undoubtedly its exquisite soft corals. These living jewels sway gently with the subtle movements of the water, creating a mesmerizing display of colour and form. Among these vibrant gardens, you'll need to train your eyes to spot the smaller, but equally captivating, inhabitants. Nudibranchs, those colourful sea slugs, are frequent finds here, their intricate patterns and flamboyant hues a testament to the reef's biodiversity. Each dive reveals new species, sometimes tucked away in unexpected places.

As you explore the contours of the wall, keep an eye out for enormous sea fans, some reaching impressive sizes. These delicate, fan-shaped gorgonians filter plankton from the water column and provide shelter for various small invertebrates. The area is also known for intermittent visits from larger residents. Sea turtles, particularly the Green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) and Hawksbill sea turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), glide gracefully through the water, often pausing to browse on the coral or rest on ledges. Their serene presence adds a touch of magic to the dive.

Beyond the smaller reef dwellers, the deeper sections and the open water off the wall can occasionally surprise you with the sight of Blacktip reef sharks (Carcharhinus melanopterus). These sleek predators cruise along the reef edge, a reminder of the healthy ecosystem thriving here. Alongside these, the more common reef fish form a bustling community. Triggerfish (Balistidae) dart defensively among the corals, while puffers (Tetraodontidae) and boxfish (Ostraciidae) navigate the landscape with a more deliberate pace.
