SSS Phuket Dive, Freedive & Surf Center

Located at Kata Beach in Phuket, SSS Phuket has been a fixture of the Andaman Sea diving community since 2008. The centre operates as a multi-sport hub, catering to divers, freedivers, and surfers alike. It serves as a professional base for those looking to explore the diverse marine ecosystems of the region, from shallow reef flats to deep offshore pinnacles.

From the centre, you can access a variety of diving styles, including daily boat trips and multi-day liveaboards. The operation covers everything from introductory dives to advanced technical training, including rebreather courses. Their commitment to the local environment is evident through their active coral reef conservation project based in Kata.

The centre is supported by a substantial team of 17 instructors, ensuring a high level of expertise across various disciplines. They maintain a professional diver-to-guide ratio of 4 divers per guide, which allows for attentive supervision during both recreational and technical dives.

Communication is streamlined for an international clientele, with instructors capable of teaching in English, French, German, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Thai, and Italian. This multilingual approach makes the centre a reliable choice for divers traveling from around the world.

Beyond scuba, the team is highly qualified in freediving through AIDA and Molchanovs affiliations. This breadth of knowledge means you can transition seamlessly between breath-hold disciplines and compressed air diving under professional guidance.

SSS Phuket provides a comprehensive curriculum through PADI and SSI, ranging from the initial Open Water Diver course to professional levels such as Divemaster and OWSI. They also offer specialised training including Nitrox, Deep Diver, Wreck Diver, and Sidemount courses.

For those interested in technical diving, the centre provides Discover Rebreather and advanced rebreather training. Freediving is a major pillar of their training programme, with certifications available through AIDA and Molchanovs, as well as SSI Freediving levels.

Specialty courses are also available to refine specific skills, such as Peak Performance Buoyancy, Underwater Navigator, and Underwater Photographer. The centre also hosts conservation-focused training like the Project Aware – Coral Reef Conservation course.

Daily excursions depart from Chalong Pier, with free transfers provided for guests staying in Kamala, Patong, Karon, Kata, Chalong, Rawai, and Nai Harn. The centre utilises spacious boats designed to accommodate groups for full-day trips to the Similan Islands and Koh Phi Phi.

On board, the boats are equipped to handle full-day outings, providing water, snacks, fresh fruit, breakfast, and lunch. Nitrox is available for those requiring extended bottom times on offshore sites. For those seeking more immersive experiences, the centre organises liveaboard trips on the Manta Queen 1 and Manta Queen 2.

The centre offers a complete range of equipment hire for divers, covering everything from regulators to wetsuits. For those looking to document their dives, underwater camera rentals are available.

On-site, Nitrox is available for use. For training purposes, the centre utilises a swimming pool in Chalong for confined water sessions, ensuring a controlled environment for skill development before heading out to the reefs.

The Andaman Sea around Phuket is rich with diverse marine life. On the reefs and pinnacles, you will encounter a variety of large pelagics and reef fish, including Great barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda), Tuna (Thunnus), and various species of Snapper (Lutjanus). You can also find many types of rays, such as Manta rays (Mobula alfredi), Blue-spotted stingrays (Hypanus americanus), and Leopard rays.

For those interested in sharks, the area is known for White-tip reef sharks (Triaenodon obesus), Bamboo sharks (Chiloscyllium), and Leopard sharks (Triakis semifasciata). Turtles are also a common sight across many of the dive sites.

The reef structure itself is vibrant, composed of various corals, Soft coral (Alcyonacea), and Sea anemone (Actiniaria). These habitats support a massive array of smaller inhabitants, including Butterflyfish (Chaetodon), Angelfish (Pomacanthidae), and various species of Fusilier (Caesio).

Macro enthusiasts will find plenty to explore in the smaller crevices and sandy patches. The area is home to various Nudibranch (Chromodoris willani), Octopus (Octopus vulgaris), and Seahorse (Hippocampus kuda). You can also look for Ornate ghost pipefish (Solenostomus paradoxus), Frogfish (Antennarius), and various species of Scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae), alongside many types of shrimp and crabs.

Diving conditions in the region vary significantly by season. The dry season from November to April generally offers the most stable conditions, while the green season from May to October sees fewer tourists and more affordable options.

Water currents can be quite varied depending on the specific site; while Racha Yai typically experiences low currents, sites like Shark Point and Koh Dok Mai are known for strong currents. Divers should always check the specific conditions for their chosen site before heading out.
