La Escafandra (Be the Ocean)

La Escafandra is situated in Las Eras, a location on Tenerife that offers a more relaxed alternative to the busier tourist hubs. Founded by Juan Jesus Delgado and now run by instructors Patri and Natalia, the centre focuses on a respectful, ocean-centric approach to diving.

The centre provides access to the diverse volcanic underwater topography of the Canary Islands, offering both shore-based entries and boat-based trips. Whether you are looking for a guided exploration of the local reef flat or a more structured training programme, the focus remains on high-quality instruction and local knowledge.

The team is led by two PADI instructors, Patri and Natalia, who manage the daily operations and training. Their approach is built on a deep understanding of the local Tenerife dive sites and a commitment to marine conservation.

Instruction is available for all levels, from beginners undertaking their first Discover Scuba Diving experience to advanced divers working towards Divemaster. The centre operates seven days a week, providing flexibility for those planning their diving schedule around their stay in the islands.

A full range of PADI courses is available on-site. Beginners can start with Discover Scuba Diving or the Open Water Diver course, while those looking to progress can enrol in the Advanced Open Water Diver programme.

For divers moving into professional or specialised territory, the centre offers Rescue Diver and Divemaster training, alongside various PADI specialties. The instruction is tailored to the individual's level to ensure a high standard of training and safety.

For those preferring to leave the shore behind, the centre offers guided immersions from a boat. These trips allow access to deeper sites and different marine habitats away from the immediate coastline.

The centre offers a complete rental service, allowing you to bring only your personal items. You can hire full kits, including wetsuits, fins, and masks.

Beyond rental, La Escafandra operates a technical service department. They provide specialised maintenance for regulators and other essential diving equipment, making it a practical stop for divers who need their kit serviced while travelling.

The waters around Tenerife host a vast array of marine life. You will encounter various large fish, including groupers (Epinephelus), snappers (Lutjanus), and amberjack (Seriola), often moving in schools alongside barracuda schools and sardine (Sardina pilchardus) shoals. Large pelagics such as eagle rays (Aetobatus), stingrays, and even dolphins (Delphinidae) are part of the local ecosystem.

The seabed is a complex habitat featuring brain coral, sponges (Porifera), and various sea anemones (Actiniaria). You can find many crustaceans, including the Canary Islands lobster (Homaridae) and various crabs (Brachyura), often tucked away in rocky crevices.

Macro enthusiasts will find plenty to observe, from colourful nudibranchs (Chromodoris willani) to octopus (Octopus vulgaris) and cuttlefish (Sepiidae). Look closely for seahorses (Hippocampus kuda), frogfish (Antennarius), and various species of scorpionfish or lizardfish. The sandy patches and reef edges are also home to garden eels (Gorgasia) and many different types of shrimp (Caridea).

The area is accessible for diving throughout most of the year. Divers can choose between guided shore dives or boat-based excursions depending on the local swell and the specific sites being visited.
