Scubaqua is situated in St. Eustatius, an island that remains largely untouched by mass tourism. The centre itself is housed in a unique, renovated historic building that once belonged to the Dutch West India Company, blending 17th-century charm with modern diving facilities.

Operating since 1997, the centre has established a reputation for personalised service and environmental stewardship. It is a dedicated PADI facility that focuses on sustainable operations, using solar panels and rainwater harvesting to minimise its footprint on this delicate Caribbean ecosystem.

The team at Scubaqua is composed of experienced, medically trained guides who prioritise safety and small group sizes. This approach ensures that whether you are a novice or an experienced diver, the instruction and guidance are tailored to your specific needs and comfort levels.

Communication is easy for international visitors, as the staff is multilingual, speaking English, French, Dutch, German, and Spanish. This makes the centre a reliable choice for divers travelling from various parts of the world.

Scubaqua offers a comprehensive range of PADI courses designed to take you from your first breath underwater to professional levels. Beginners can start with Discover Scuba Diving and the Open Water Diver course, with subsequent training available through Advanced Open Water Diver, Deep Diver, and Underwater Navigation.

For those looking to specialise, the centre provides training in Drift Diver, Enriched-Air (Nitrox), Wreck Diver, and Digital Photography. More advanced divers can pursue Rescue Diver and Divemaster certifications, ensuring a complete progression path within the PADI system.

The centre operates two custom-made fiberglass dive boats. One is a monohull vessel powered by a 440 HP Yanmar engine, while the other is a 250 HP Yamaha powered boat. These vessels are designed to handle the local conditions while providing a stable platform for divers.

The boats have a capacity of up to 25 persons including staff on the larger vessel and 15 persons including staff on the smaller one. They are well-equipped for safety and comfort, carrying VHF radios, GPS units, life rings, fire extinguishers, and personal flotation devices (PFDs). Nitrox is available on board for your dives.

For those looking to hire kit, Scubaqua provides a full range of well-maintained equipment from reputable brands such as Aqua Lung and Cressi. This includes everything from regulators and BCDs to fins and masks.

The shore-based facilities include rinsing areas for your gear and a shop for souvenirs and refreshments. The centre is also equipped with a DAN emergency oxygen kit and a first aid kit to ensure safety on-site.

The volcanic topography of the island creates diverse habitats, from deep walls to sandy seagrass meadows. You will encounter a wide variety of pelagic fish and reef sharks in the blue, alongside large schools of snapper (Lutjanus), grunts, and bighead jacks. The walls and canyons are often draped in Sea fan (Gorgoniidae), wire coral, and black corals.

For macro enthusiasts, the island is a treasure trove. You can find a variety of nudibranchs (Chromodoris willani), seahorses (Hippocampus kuda), frogfish (Antennarius), and scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae). The sandy areas and crevices are also home to many crustaceans, including lobster (Homaridae), slipper lobster, and various crabs such as the decorator crab and the red tear crab.

Large marine life is a regular feature, including Hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), Green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas), and various other sea turtles (Cheloniidae). You may also spot spotted eagle rays, southern stingrays, and Caribbean reef sharks patrolling the reefs.

The dive sites are located a short 5 to 20-minute boat ride from the harbour, which helps to minimise the risk of seasickness. Generally, the swell is low, and the island provides natural protection for many of the sites even when the sea is slightly more active.

While currents are typically very gentle, they can vary. Some sites, such as Barracuda Reef, offer three mooring points that allow for drift diving if the current is sufficient. September is the hurricane season and is often a period when boat maintenance takes place.
