Nassimo Thila Marine Reserve: Pinnacle Diving in North Malé

Dropping onto Nassimo Thila, you immediately feel the vibrant energy of a healthy Maldivian reef. This thila, a submerged pinnacle, rises from the deeper ocean floor, acting as a magnet for marine life from the smallest reef dwellers to impressive pelagic hunters. The topography here encourages encounters; it’s a place where you can settle in, absorb the scenery, and let the ocean's theatre unfold around you, often providing multi-directional action as life moves around the structure.

The thila's structure is an oval-shaped reef with a broad, shallow top, featuring several scattered pinnacles, overhangs, and swim-throughs. These formations are draped with soft corals and gorgonian fans, creating varied habitats. You'll find yourself gliding along sections bursting with colour, providing shelter and hunting grounds for smaller fish, which in turn attract larger predators, establishing a clear food chain playing out before your eyes.

Pelagic marine life is a significant draw here. Keep a keen eye out for the unmistakable silhouette of various sharks cruising in the blue, a common and thrilling sight in these waters. Barracudas, often seen schooling, add a dynamic, shimmering layer to the underwater landscape, their collective movements captivating as they hold their position against the flow. Among the more charismatic inhabitants you might encounter are the iconic Napoleon wrasse (Cheilinus undulatus), identifiable by their distinctive hump and often showing a curious demeanour as divers pass by. Not to be outdone, agile eagle rays (Aetobatus narinari) are also frequent visitors, gliding effortlessly with their broad wings, often making an appearance in the open water surrounding the thila's main structure.

Nassimo Thila is also a known gathering point for manta rays (Manta birostris). Observing these majestic creatures in their natural environment is an experience few forget, as they gracefully undulate through the water, sometimes lingering for extended periods. This thila consistently delivers a broad spectrum of marine life, cementing its reputation as a significant dive location for those seeking diverse encounters beneath the Maldivian waves.

The site's topography includes features on the northeastern side and scattered pinnacles rising into the 18–25 metre range. Depending on the current, different areas of the thila will offer varied experiences, demanding your attention and awareness. The site is commonly dived in an outgoing current, which can be strong, but a moderate outgoing current is often considered ideal for experiencing the full scope of the marine activity.

This thila is a protected marine area, designated in 1999, which contributes to the health and abundance of its ecosystem. While sometimes referred to as Lankan Thila, Paradise Rock, or Virgin Reef by some operators, its core identity remains Nassimo Thila. It's especially known for its large pinnacles, extensive soft coral growth, and the consistent chance of seeing large pelagics and schooling fish, making it a dynamic dive for those prepared for its conditions.
