Kuramathi Dive Club

The Kuramathi Dive Club is situated on Kuramathi Island within the Rasdhoo Atoll, a prime location for divers seeking high-energy encounters with pelagic species. The centre has earned recognition as the Maldives Tourism Award Best Dive Center 2022, reflecting its standing in the local diving community.

You will find yourself diving in an environment defined by dramatic topography, ranging from deep-water channels to vibrant coral thilas. The area is particularly renowned for its ability to host large predators and seasonal visitors like manta rays, making it a significant destination for both recreational and advanced divers.

The diving team is highly experienced, with a cumulative total of over 30,000 dives recorded. They manage a wide range of diver profiles, maintaining a ratio of a maximum of two divers per guide for those undertaking training.

Instruction is provided through both PADI and SSI programmes. This includes everything from introductory sessions like Try Scuba Diving and Basic Diver to professional-level training such as Dive Guide. There are also dedicated programmes for younger divers, including Scuba Ranger, Junior Scuba Diver, and Junior Open Water Diver.

A comprehensive curriculum is available through SSI and PADI, catering to every stage of a diver's development. Beginners can start with Try Scuba Diving or the Open Water Diver course, while those looking to progress can enrol in the Advanced Open Water Diver or the Specialty courses.

More advanced training includes the Rescue Diver and Stress and Rescue programmes, as well as the Dive Guide course. The centre also offers specialised training in areas such as Wreck, Deep, Night, and Digital Underwater Photography, alongside courses on Waves, Tides & Currents and Fish ID.

The centre operates four 15-metre fiberglass dhonis. These vessels are equipped with freshwater showers and toilets on board to ensure comfort between dives.

For longer excursions, such as half-day safaris or full-day trips, meals are provided. The boats are also used for specialised sessions, including night dives and blackwater diving. Nitrox is available on board for certified divers.

The centre provides full kit hire, including BCDs, regulators, dive computers, 2.5mm short wetsuits, masks, fins, snorkels, and weight belts. Much of the equipment is sourced from Scubapro, with Suunto computers and Luxfer cylinders used on site.

Safety is a primary focus, with a dual-cylinder DAN oxygen system and first aid kits available. For added security, a hyperbaric chamber is located on the island, managed by German physicians.

The area is a stronghold for large pelagics. You can regularly encounter various shark species, including white tip reef sharks, grey reef sharks, hammerhead sharks, leopard sharks, silky sharks, and nurse sharks. Large schools of trevallies, tuna, and barracuda are also common sights around the channels and thilas.

In the channels and near the reef structures, you will find eagle rays, southern stingrays, and manta rays, the latter being most frequent from November to April. Turtles, including green and hawksbill varieties, are frequently observed near the reefs.

Macro life and smaller residents add significant detail to the dives. Look for ghost pipefish, leaf fish, ribbon eels, and various species of moray eels, such as the honeycomb moray. You may also spot frogfish, lionfish, and various species of nudibranchs or small crustaceans in the crevices of the reef.

The reef itself is built upon healthy coral formations, including large tabular corals, which provide habitat for napoleon wrasse, groupers, snappers, and sweetlips.

Diving in the Rasdhoo Atoll involves a variety of conditions depending on the site. Many of the best locations, such as the channels and thilas, are subject to moderate to strong currents, often requiring drift diving techniques.

Seasonal patterns play a role in animal sightings, particularly for manta rays, which are most prevalent between November and April. The presence of bioluminescent plankton during dawn dives provides a unique opportunity for night-time or early morning visibility.
