Les Aiguilles de la Vacca, Corsica: Pinnacle Diving

Les Aiguilles de la Vacca, often referred to simply as Les Aiguilles, presents itself as a natural extension of the main Vacca rock. This site is defined by a distinctive rocky arc, emerging from the seabed as a series of isolated pinnacles and submerged outcrops rather than a continuous wall. These formations create a dynamic topography, offering multiple routes and exploration opportunities as you navigate through its various depths, ranging from 13 metres at the shallower sections to 28 metres at the base of the deeper rock structures.

As you descend onto Les Aiguilles, you will find yourself in an environment shaped by these rock reliefs, which define the dive profile. The site is not a simple circumnavigation of an islet; instead, it's a playground of varied terrain, with passages at shallower depths contrasting with the deeper extensions of the arc. This distinct geological feature sets Les Aiguilles apart, requiring you to actively follow the contours of the rock rather than a straightforward path, making each dive unique.

The resident marine life at Les Aiguilles adapts to this varied topography. Large groupers are a common sight, often found sheltering within the crevices and underhangs created by the rock formations. You will also encounter schools of barracudas moving in the open water around the pinnacles, their silver bodies reflecting the sunlight filtering through the water. Saddled seabream and other breams are frequently observed grazing near the rock faces, while mullet can be seen sifting through the sandy patches between the rock structures.

Anthias, with their vibrant colours, populate the more sheltered areas of the pinnacles, adding bursts of colour to the rocky landscape. The interaction of these species with the specific architecture of Les Aiguilles creates a distinct feel to the dive. The isolated nature of the pinnacles provides both shelter and exposure, influencing where different fish species congregate and how they behave, giving you the chance to observe them in their natural environment without feeling like you are simply passing through.
