Diving - Hondarribia

Buceo Hondarribia is established in the heart of the Hondarribia marina on the Guipuzcoan coast. Situated directly in the port's technical zone, the centre provides a practical, professional base for divers looking to explore the Cantabrian Sea.

With more than two decades of experience in maritime sports, the centre has built a reputation for technical reliability. They serve as a hub for both local divers and those travelling to the Pays Basque for structured training or recreational exploration.

As a PADI 5 Star IDC centre, the facility is equipped to handle a high level of professional training. They offer a comprehensive curriculum including everything from initial certifications to advanced professional levels like Divemaster.

The team provides instruction in several languages, with Spanish being the primary language used for direction and instruction. This makes the centre a versatile option for those navigating the regional diving scene.

The training programme is extensive, covering all major PADI and SSI certification levels. You can begin with Open Water Diver and progress through Advanced Open Water Diver and Rescue Diver.

Specialised training is also available, such as Nitrox, Deep Diver, and Drysuit Diving. For those looking to refine their skills, they offer courses in Buoyancy, Underwater Navigation, Fish Identification, and even Ice Diving.

The centre operates two vessels for their sea excursions: a 7.5m inflatable and a 9m boat. These boats facilitate access to the various rocky reefs and protected zones along the coast.

On board, you will find refreshments including water and cold drinks. The centre also conducts night dives from these vessels, allowing for exploration of the local marine life after sunset.

The centre is a well-equipped facility offering full kit hire, including wetsuits, regulators, BCDs, cylinders, computers, torches, and even drysuits for colder conditions. They also provide camera equipment for those looking to document their dives.

Beyond rental, the centre operates an authorised technical repair service and a retail shop. They also manage cylinder maintenance, including annual visual inspections and five-year hydrostatic testing.

The local marine life is diverse, with rocky reefs and protected zones providing habitats for many species. You will regularly encounter Octopus (Octopoda), torpedo fish, and various species of wrasse. The seabed is often home to sea anemones (Actiniaria), sea urchins, and starfish.

Macro life is a highlight of the area, particularly for those interested in smaller organisms. You can find nudibranchs and various species of shrimp (Caridea) amongst the rocks and seaweed.

In the late summer, the area becomes particularly interesting as you may spot mola mola or the red algae Gelidium sesquipedale. The rocky structures also host European conger (Conger conger), moray eels, and various species of sea bass.

Diving in this region is seasonal, with the centre operating a regular schedule from June through October, and more limited availability during the winter months. The maritime environment can vary, but the centre's location in the marina provides a stable starting point for all departures.
