Esterel Sea School

Located at Port Santa Lucia in Saint-Raphaël, Esterel Sea School operates within one of the most striking maritime environments in France. The coastline here is defined by the dramatic red volcanic rocks of the Estérel massif, providing a rugged backdrop for both depth and exploration.

The centre is officially affiliated with the FFESSM and is specifically structured around the disciplines of apnea, underwater hunting, and underwater hiking. This focus allows for a more specialised approach to the Mediterranean biotope than a standard recreational dive centre.

The school is led by Jean-Michel Annibal, a State-qualified diver and National Instructor for underwater hunting (PSM). He also holds the MEF 1 qualification in apnea, bringing over 14 years of experience in breath-hold diving to the instruction.

Instruction is delivered in French, with a strong emphasis on environmental education and the preservation of the local Mediterranean ecosystem. The teaching style is geared towards individual progression, whether you are participating in a group initiation or seeking high-level coaching.

The curriculum is heavily specialised in breath-hold disciplines, offering everything from initial inductions to advanced certifications. You can train in underwater hunting through the PSM1, PSM2, and PSM3 levels, as well as the RIFA-PSM and RIFAA certifications.

Beyond hunting, the centre offers apnea training (vertical apnea) and underwater hiking (randonnée subaquatique). They also provide Sport-Santé programmes and individual coaching for those looking to refine their technique in the water or in a pool.

The centre operates a 5,50m Tarpon semi-rigid powered by a 100 hp Suzuki engine. The vessel is designed to carry between 4 and 6 trainees for trips out to the various coastal sites.

Safety and environmental protection are integrated into the boat's setup. It is equipped with a VHF radio, a first aid kit, and an oxygen therapy kit. To protect the fragile marine flora and fauna of the seabed, the boat also utilises a Minn Kota electric motor for anchoring.

Full equipment hire is available for those not travelling with their own kit. The centre maintains a partnership with Epsealon, ensuring high-quality equipment is available for its students.

On-site, the school provides all the necessary essentials for a day of training or exploration. For those undertaking specific underwater hunting stages, accommodation options are also available.

The diving area covers a vast stretch of coastline from Fréjus to Saint-Tropez, meaning conditions can vary significantly depending on whether you are in a sheltered bay or near the open capes. The terrain ranges from rocky calanques to open gulfs.

Navigation is conducted via semi-rigid, allowing for efficient movement between the Estérel and the more distant sites like Cap Camarat. The use of electric anchoring systems helps ensure that the seabed remains undisturbed during stops.
