Fare Vavae is a family guesthouse built for travellers who prefer a handful of bungalows to a large resort. Your day can run at an unhurried pace here. Breakfast, a swim, a bicycle ride and a cold drink at the bar are all perfectly plausible uses of the afternoon, with no timetable demanding that you join in. It is a useful base for divers who want Raiatea around them, but who also appreciate having somewhere genuinely low-key to return to.

You stay in Tevaitoa, on Raiatea, in French Polynesia, on the island's western side. Fare Vavae sits beside the lagoon, with mountain and garden surroundings, and the bungalows face Mount Temehani. The property is set away from the main road, so the location is rural in character rather than town-centre convenient.

A beach is within walking distance, making it easy to head out for a swim, a photograph of Bora Bora or a sunset. Fish & Blue is about 3 miles away by road, while Opoa Beach Restaurant is about 27 miles away; dining beyond the guesthouse therefore calls for a little planning rather than an impromptu stroll to the next restaurant.

The accommodation is arranged as bungalows with a private entrance, a terrace and views towards the garden, pool or local surroundings. The Opuhi bungalow is the sensible couple's choice if you value extra space around your bags and belongings; the Orchidee bungalow works better when a third person is sharing. Air conditioning takes the edge off a hot, salt-heavy day, while a ceiling fan gives you another way to keep the air moving. There is also a dining area, an electric kettle, a wardrobe, a flat-screen television and free WiFi, with a private bathroom, shower, towels, toiletries and hairdryer keeping the practical business straightforward.

The bungalow terrace is more than a decorative line in a room description: it gives you somewhere to sit with a drink, take breakfast or let the day slow down before bed. Daily housekeeping is available, and a safety deposit box is provided for the small items you would rather not leave loose in the room.

Breakfast is continental and served from 7am, with pastries, cheese, fresh fruit and juice. The fuller version adds cakes, yoghurt, homemade preserves, bread, butter and a savoury element, plus tea or coffee. You can take breakfast on your bungalow terrace, which is a more civilised start than wrestling with a buffet queue in full dive-holiday mode.

For the evening, the Fenua basket brings a complete menu of starter, main course and dessert. It is built around fresh local produce, seasonal availability and the catch of the day, so dinner follows what the island and the fishing have brought in rather than a fixed international menu. A bar and a snack bar cover the simpler moments, while an outdoor dining area gives you somewhere to sit when you want food without dressing the occasion up.

The outdoor swimming pool comes with a deck for lying in the sun, plus sun loungers and pool or beach towels. That is the main post-dive recovery plan: get wet without putting a tank on your back, then move very little. The garden and outdoor seating add space for reading, while board games and outdoor games cover the occasional spell of bad weather or low enthusiasm.

Free bicycles are available for exploring the surroundings, and hiking is one of the ways to see more of Raiatea under your own steam. The guesthouse can also arrange island outings, including the Taputapuatea marae, a pearl farm, a vanilla plantation, the Faaroa River and Mount Temehani. Raiatea Airport is about 6 miles away, roughly an 11-minute drive. An airport shuttle is available as a paid service, and car hire can be arranged; free private parking is available on site, with a reservation required. Free WiFi covers the property, and packed lunches are available when an excursion or a long island day makes returning for lunch impractical.

Check-in runs from 2pm to 6pm, while check-out is from 7am to 10am. Keep those hours in mind if your flight lands late or your departure starts early. Cash is not accepted, pets are not allowed, and children older than 14 are welcome; cots are not available, while extra beds depend on the accommodation selected and availability.

The hotel uses photovoltaic panels, solar-powered outdoor lighting and a solar water heater. The approach is practical rather than decorative: energy comes partly from the sun, while the property reduces and sorts its waste.

Garden waste is turned into compost, and the pension maintains a Fa'a'apu with a vegetable garden and fruit trees for its own use. For a small guesthouse beside a lagoon, these are concrete choices that connect daily operations with the landscape outside your bungalow.
