Raiatea Lodge Hotel

Raiatea Lodge Hotel is a small property with seven bungalows, rooms in the main building and a tropical park covering more than a hectare. Renovated in 2020, it keeps a colonial style with polished wood and a distinctly Polynesian feel rather than trying to look like an anonymous beach resort. You arrive through the coconut grove, then find the restaurant and bar on the ground floor of the mansion, with the accommodation spread between the building and the gardens.

This is a sensible choice if you want your diving holiday to include proper downtime, greenery and somewhere attractive to sit without turning the evening into a compulsory activity. The setting suits couples particularly well, while family accommodation is also available. You can spend the late afternoon on your terrace, beside the pool or with a book, which is often exactly what tired legs and a salt-stiffened back are asking for.

The lodge sits on the west coast of Ra’iatea, in Uturoa, French Polynesia, facing Bora Bora across the water. Raiatea Airport is about 3.3 miles away by road, with a drive of roughly five to six minutes. Uturoa town is around 10 minutes away by car, including its covered market.

The hotel is not presented as a beachfront property, and no beach access is specified. What you do get is a lagoon-facing position, a large tropical park and protection from the prevailing winds, which are particularly noticeable between June and October. The surrounding island gives you a practical base for hikes towards the Tapioi and Temehani mountains, as well as a convenient launch point for a visit to Taha’a, the neighbouring island.

Every room has air conditioning, a ceiling fan, a private bathroom, a hairdryer, a safe, a flat-screen television and free Wi-Fi. The large terrace is the detail that matters most once you return from the water: a place for a drink, a towel-drying rack for clothing and a few quiet minutes before dinner. A refrigerator is also available, useful for keeping drinking water cold when the tropical heat has done its work.

For two, a Lagoon View Room gives you the most direct connection with the water, while the sea-view bungalow offers more room to spread out and a more separate garden setting. Couples wanting space and privacy should look at the bungalows; the Family bungalow is the practical option when four people need to share without turning the room into a luggage puzzle. The Standard Double Room suits a couple or a small travelling party, with capacity for three.

The rooms in the main building look towards either the lagoon or the lush garden, while the bungalows sit along the edges of the tropical park. That gives you a choice between being close to the mansion’s restaurant and bar or having a more tucked-away base. Upper floors are reached by stairs only, so factor that into your choice if carrying bags after a flight is already enough of a workout.

The main restaurant, Raiatea Lodge, serves lunch and dinner in a tropical setting. The cooking is homemade, with fish from the lagoon, New Zealand meat, Polynesian flavours and Mediterranean influences. That is a useful combination after a day outside: local ingredients, familiar reference points and a proper meal rather than a plate assembled by committee.

Breakfast is served as a continental, gluten-free and buffet selection. You can also use the bar, while a snack bar and minibar cover the less formal moments when dinner still feels a little too ambitious. Special-diet menus are available on request, and children’s meals are available. Packed lunches can also be arranged, handy when your day takes you away from the lodge rather than back to the restaurant between activities.

The outdoor centre of gravity is the swimming pool, with sun loungers, umbrellas and pool towels available. The garden and sun terrace give you other places to sit, and the open-air bath adds a quieter option when you want warm water without making a project of it. Massage is available as well, which can be a better plan than pretending your shoulders are perfectly fine.

You can borrow snorkelling equipment, take a two-person canoe or cycle with the available bicycles. The small island of Miri, with its white-sand beach, is about 10 minutes away by canoe and boat, and boat trips can be arranged. Kayaking, jet-ski outings and fishing are also available, while walking tours, bike tours, hiking and local-culture tours provide alternatives on land.

For a slower evening, the hotel has books and board games. You can also arrange an excursion to Taha’a, rent a car or take part in a local cultural tour. The offer is broad enough for a couple travelling together when one wants movement and the other wants a chair, without forcing either of you into the same plan.

The hotel offers a transfer service to and from Raiatea Airport, bookable through the hotel. Car hire is also available, and private parking on site is free and does not require a reservation. Wi-Fi is available throughout the property. Luggage storage, concierge assistance and a tour desk help when your arrival, departure or island plans do not fit neatly around a standard hotel day.

Check-in runs from 15:00 to 20:00, and you need to tell the hotel your expected arrival time. Check-out is by 11:00. You will need photo identification and a payment card at check-in, while cash is accepted as a payment method. Children of all ages are welcome; children aged 12 and over are charged as adults, and cots can be requested for children up to two years old. There are no extra beds, and pets are not allowed.

From 1 April 2027, half-board with breakfast and dinner becomes compulsory and is payable at the hotel. Check the conditions attached to your accommodation category before booking, particularly if you prefer to arrange meals independently. Laundry is available as a paid service, and the upper floors are accessible by stairs only.
