Roatan Divers

Established in 2013, Roatan Divers is situated in the heart of West End, Roatan. As a PADI 5 Star IDC Center and a dedicated Tec Center, they provide a structured environment for both recreational enthusiasts and technical divers looking to push their limits.

The centre operates with a boutique service philosophy, focusing on personalised attention and small groups. With their own private quays, the transition from shore to boat is seamless, allowing you to spend more time in the water and less time on logistics.

The team is comprised of an international group of expert instructors and qualified captains. They cater to a diverse clientele, with staff capable of communicating in English, Spanish, French, German, and Portuguese.

Safety and individual progression are central to their teaching method, maintaining a strict ratio of one guide for every six divers. This ensures that whether you are a novice or an experienced diver, the level of supervision remains appropriate to your skill set.

The course catalogue is extensive, covering the entire PADI spectrum. You can begin with Discover Scuba Diving or work through the Open Water Diver and Advanced Open Water Diver certifications. For those looking to specialise, they offer courses in Nitrox, Deep, Drift, Wreck, Navigation, and Sidemount diving.

For technical divers, the centre is a PADI Tec Center, offering advanced training including Tec Diving and Self Reliant courses. Professional aspirants can undergo Divemaster Training, with pathways leading towards MSDT Instructor and IDC Staff Instructor levels. They also host specialized programmes such as Coral Restoration and Lionfish Hunter.

The centre operates a fleet of four custom-built fast boats designed to reach the best dive sites around the island efficiently. These vessels are equipped to handle various dive profiles, including night dives.

On board, you will find amenities to make the surface intervals more comfortable, including refreshing drinks and facilities for rinsing. The boats are set up to support a variety of diving styles, from relaxed reef explorations to more active sessions.

The centre offers full equipment hire for those not travelling with their own kit. They provide a 'boutique' service where the team handles the heavy lifting, including assembly, cylinder changes, rinsing, and storage of your gear.

On-site facilities include hot showers and amenities such as shampoo and conditioner for use after your dives. They also provide Wi-Fi access for those needing to stay connected while on land.

The reefs around Roatan are vibrant, featuring a dense array of fixed life. You will find a variety of corals, including brain coral, pillar coral, lettuce coral, and fire coral, alongside sea whips and sea fans (Gorgoniidae). The seascape is further enriched by various sponges, such as barrel sponge, elephant ear sponge, and tube sponges.

Large pelagics and reef residents are a regular occurrence. You can expect to see Eagle ray (Aetobatus), Southern stingray (Hypanus americanus), and various species of sharks, including Nurse shark (Ginglymostoma cirratum) and Caribbean reef sharks. Groupers are abundant, with sightings of Nassau groupers, black groupers, and yellowfin tuna frequenting the area.

For those interested in macro life, the crevices and reef flats hold a wealth of smaller creatures. Look for the Caribbean reef squid, Octopus (Octopus vulgaris), and various crustaceans like Spiny lobster (Palinuridae), lobster (Homaridae), and various species of shrimp. You may also encounter seahorses (Hippocampus kuda), nudibranchs, and various species of crabs and anemone shrimp.

Seasonal sightings can include Hammerhead sharks, which are occasionally seen in the open sea and on shallow reefs near West End. While rare, whale shark migrations have been noted in the area, and lemon sharks are sometimes spotted near Pigeon Cay.

Roatan is a year-round diving destination. The dry season from March to October typically offers warmer temperatures and better visibility, while the season from November to February can see fewer tourists and larger schools of fish.

When strong winds affect the northern side of the island, dive operations are moved to the southern side to take advantage of the lee, ensuring calmer conditions for the buddy pair.
