Roatan Diving School

Located in Roatan, Honduras, Roatan Diving School is built around a philosophy of continuous learning. The centre serves a dual purpose, catering to recreational divers looking for adventure and professionals seeking advanced certifications in both Scuba and Freediving.

Whether you are looking to complete your first Open Water Diver course or you are an experienced diver aiming for a Divemaster or Instructor rating, the school provides a structured environment for progression. The centre also integrates wellness into the diving experience, offering yoga and meditation alongside its aquatic programmes.

The instructional team is composed of highly qualified professionals, including Ricardo Montans, a world freediving champion and AIDA Instructor Trainer. The team also includes Nick Powers, an SSI Instructor Certifier with a focus on adaptive diving through the Warfighter Scuba initiative, and Dawn Powers, an instructor specialising in classified and adaptive diving.

Management and safety are handled by experienced staff, with Caroline Rodriguez serving as manager and AIDA freediving judge. Boat preparations and maritime safety are overseen by Chief Captain Louis Tejeda, ensuring that all vessel operations meet the school's rigorous standards.

The school offers a comprehensive range of SSI Scuba courses, spanning from Basic Diver and Scuba Diver through to Open Water Diver and Advanced Open Water Diver. For those looking to specialise, they provide training in Wreck Diving, Deep Diving, Navigation, and Night & Limited Visibility.

Professional training is a core pillar of the centre, offering paths to become a Divemaster, Assistant Instructor, and through the Instructor Training Course (IDC). They also provide specialised skills training such as Perfect Buoyancy, Search and Recovery, and Scuba Skills Update.

Freediving education is equally extensive, with certifications available through AIDA and Molchanovs. This includes everything from AIDA Level 1 Try Freediving to Master Freediver levels, as well as professional tracks like the AIDA Instructor Course and Molchanovs Instructor training.

The centre provides full kit hire, which is included in their diving packages. This covers all the essential equipment required for your dives, from regulators to BCDs.

For those looking to extend their bottom time or dive more safely, Enriched Air Nitrox is available on-site. The centre also maintains oxygen safety equipment to ensure standard safety protocols are met during all excursions.

The reefs around Roatan are vibrant, featuring a dense array of fixed life including various species of brain coral, pillar coral, and soft coral (Alcyonacea). You will find large sea fans (Gorgoniidae), sea whip, and elephant ear sponge decorating the seascape, alongside various sponges (Porifera) and black corals.

Large pelagics and reef residents are common, including Caribbean reef sharks, Nurse shark (Ginglymostoma cirratum), and various species of Grouper (Epinephelus). You may also encounter Great barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda), Eagle ray (Aetobatus), and several types of turtles, such as the Green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) and Loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta).

In the smaller details of the reef, look for macro life such as Nudibranch (Chromodoris willani), Seahorse (Hippocampus kuda), and various species of shrimp including Cleaner shrimp (Lysmata) and striped coral shrimp. Other interesting finds include Octopus (Octopus vulgaris), Scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae), and garden eels (Gorgasia).

The area is known for sites that can experience strong currents, particularly during specific shark dives. Divers should be prepared for varying conditions depending on the specific site and time of day.
