Roatan Freediving School & Training Center

Located on the island of Roatán in Honduras, the Roatan Freediving School & Training Center is a dedicated hub for apnea enthusiasts. Since its establishment in 2010, the centre has become a global reference point for the sport, hosting world championships and the annual Caribbean Cup.

The school is situated at Luna Beach, providing a direct connection to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. This location allows divers to train in some of the most stable and clear conditions in the Caribbean, making it a preferred site for national and international record attempts.

The centre is built around a high level of technical expertise, catering to everyone from those taking their first breath-hold to professional instructors. They provide a wide range of training pathways through multiple international bodies, ensuring divers can follow their preferred methodology.

Instruction is delivered in both English and Spanish. Beyond formal certification, the school organises daily training sessions, workshops, and specialised clinics in underwater photography and yoga to support a holistic approach to freediving.

The training programme is exceptionally diverse, covering all major freediving curricula. You can choose between AIDA courses (from AIDA 1 through to AIDA 4 Master Freediver and Instructor courses), Molchanovs (Wave 1, 2, and 3), and the Apnea Total progression.

For those following the PADI pathway, the school offers PADI Freediver, PADI Advanced Freediver, and PADI Master Freediver certifications. The centre is also equipped to handle professional development, providing the necessary training for those looking to become instructors.

The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is a vibrant ecosystem teeming with life. You will encounter large pelagics such as Caribbean reef sharks (Carcharhinus perezi) and various species of sharks (Selachimorpha). Schools of fish, including Jacks (Carangidae), Snappers (Lutjanidae), and various silversides, move through the water column, often accompanied by large tarpons and yellowfin tuna.

The reef structure itself is built from a rich tapestry of life, including Brain coral (Diploria), pillar coral, sea whips, and various soft corals (Alcyonacea). You will find sponges (Porifera), such as barrel sponge and elephant ear sponge, alongside gorgonians (Gorgonacea) and various types of sea whip and black corals (Antipatharia) providing cover for smaller inhabitants.

For those interested in macro life, the reef offers endless discovery. Look for nudibranchs (Chromodoris willani), seahorses (Hippocampus), and various crustaceans like Spiny lobster (Palinuridae), mantis shrimp, and cleaner shrimp (Lysmata). You may also spot octopus (Octopus vulgaris), scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae), and various species of sea slugs and garden eels (Gorgasia).

The local conditions in Roatán are renowned for being calm and warm, which provides an ideal environment for apnea training. The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef area generally experiences low currents, allowing for controlled and safe depth work.

While the waters are famously clear, the specific conditions for deep dives are noted for their stability, making it a reliable location for practicing technical disciplines and breath-hold endurance.
