The reefs around Roatan are characterised by a high density of coral life, including brain corals, pillar coral, sea whips, and various soft corals (Alcyonacea). You will find extensive gardens of sea fans (Gorgoniidae), sponges (Porifera), and elephant ear sponges, alongside fire coral and black corals.

Large pelagics and reef residents are a regular feature of the local waters. Divers frequently encounter Green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas), Loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta), and various species of sharks, including Caribbean reef sharks and Nurse sharks (Ginglymostoma cirratum). You may also spot Eagle rays (Aetobatus), spotted eagle rays, and large tarpons cruising the reef edges.

In the mid-water and around the reef structures, schools of fish are abundant. Look for Great barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda), various groupers (Epinephelus), Jacks (Carangidae), Snapper (Lutjanus), and red snappers. You will also see colourful reef fish such as Parrotfish (Calotomus), blue chromis, creole wrasse, and Butterflyfish (Chaetodon).

For those interested in macro life, the area offers plenty of smaller treasures. Keep an eye out for Nudibranch (Chromodoris willani), seahorses (Hippocampus kuda), and various species of octopus (Octopus vulgaris). The sandy patches and crevices also host garden eels (Gorgasia), scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae), mantis shrimp, and various species of shrimp, including cleaner shrimp (Lysmata) and striped coral shrimp.
