Alligator Reef, Florida Keys: Lighthouse and teeming reef

Diving Alligator Reef means exploring a classic Florida Keys hardbottom environment, anchored by the historic Alligator Reef Lighthouse. The main reef extends across various depths, presenting expansive coral structures that form a complex habitat. You will encounter wide coral formations that host a dense population of fish, making for a rich ecosystem experience.

As you descend, the reef gently slopes, with the shallowest areas beginning around 5 meters and extending down to 21 meters. The varied topography creates numerous hiding spots and foraging grounds, supporting a high concentration of marine life. This is a site where you’ll want to take your time to thoroughly investigate the coral heads and ledges.

The site is a major hub for resident fish populations, including a large variety of grunts, snappers, and schoolmaster snapper that gather in the coral structures. Beyond the reef fish, the larger residents include barracuda patrolling the water column and loggerhead sea turtles moving through the reef. You can often see green moray eels observing from their crevices within the coral.

Alligator Reef is also a notable spot for nurse sharks, which are commonly seen resting on the sandy bottom or tucked under ledges. These docile sharks contribute to the calm atmosphere of the site, often allowing for close observation without disturbance. Keep an eye on the sand channels between coral formations for these encounters.

Beyond the visible marine life, the reef is an active coral restoration site, part of the I.CARE project.
