Situated at mile marker 103 on the Overseas Highway, Pirates Cove Watersports operates from the Reefhouse Resort & Marina in Key Largo. This prime location puts you directly on the doorstep of some of the most significant marine environments in the United States, including the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.

The centre serves as a gateway to the diverse ecosystems of the Florida Keys, ranging from shallow reef flats to deep, challenging wreck sites. Whether you are looking to complete your initial certification or to undertake professional instructor training, the facility is designed to support divers of all experience levels.

As a PADI 5 Star centre, Pirates Cove Watersports maintains high standards for both training and environmental stewardship. They are active partners in marine conservation, working alongside organisations such as the Coral Restoration Foundation, MOTE Marine Laboratory & Aquarium, and the Blue Star Iconic Reef Guardian programme.

The dive team operates with a focus on safety and personalised instruction, maintaining a ratio of one guide for every six divers. This ensures that whether you are navigating a drift dive or exploring a coral cave, you have the necessary professional support on hand.

The training programme is extensive, covering the full spectrum of PADI certifications. Beginners can start with the Discover Scuba Diving programme or work towards their Open Water Certification, with subsequent levels including Advanced Open Water and the Master Scuba Diver Trainer path.

For those looking to turn a passion for diving into a career, the centre offers professional development through the Instructor Development Course (IDC). They also provide Refresher courses for divers returning to the water after a break.

The centre utilises a pontoon boat designed to accommodate up to 32 divers or 49 passengers for snorkeling trips. The vessel is equipped with a dry box for personal belongings, a cooler with ice, and reef-safe sunscreen to ensure comfort during excursions.

Daily departures are scheduled for morning and afternoon sessions, covering a variety of sites including the famous wrecks and reef systems of the area. Nitrox is available for those looking to extend their bottom time on multi-dive days.

Divers can access a full range of rental kit on-site, including wetsuits, masks, fins, and snorkels. For those who prefer to bring their own equipment, the centre provides all the necessary support for a smooth transition from shore to boat.

Nitrox is available for divers looking to optimise their profiles, and the facility is well-equipped to handle the requirements of both recreational and advanced divers. For night dives, the centre provides the necessary support to explore the reefs after dark.

The reefs are teeming with life, from large pelagics to smaller reef residents. You will frequently encounter various species of sharks, including Nurse shark (Ginglymostoma cirratum) and Caribbean reef sharks, alongside large schools of snapper (Lutjanus) and Amberjack (Seriola).

In the coral gardens, look for a wide array of colourful fish such as Angelfish (Pomacanthidae), Butterflyfish (Chaetodon), and various species of Grouper (Epinephelus). The reef structure itself is a masterpiece of natural architecture, featuring massive brain corals, sponges (Porifera), and Christmas tree tubeworms.

Macro life and smaller inhabitants are abundant in the crevices and sandy patches. Keep an eye out for Spiny lobster (Palinuridae), Moray eel (Muraenidae), and various species of crabs (Brachyura). You may also spot southern stingrays (Hypanus americanus) or spotted eagle rays (Aetobatus) gliding along the bottom.

Sea turtles are a regular presence in these waters, with sightings of Hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) and Loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) being common during your dives.

The area is influenced by the Gulf Stream, which helps maintain high water clarity across many of the key sites. This current can provide excellent drift diving opportunities, particularly at sites like Molasses Reef and Elbow Reef.

On deeper wreck sites such as the USCGC Bibb or the USCG Duane, divers should be prepared for strong currents. These sites are best suited for advanced divers who are comfortable managing more demanding water movements.
