Sulawesi Dive Trek

Located in the coastal town of Baubau on Buton Island, Sulawesi Dive Trek serves as a strategic gateway to two distinct underwater worlds. To the south lies the Wakatobi archipelago, a renowned marine national park within the Coral Triangle, offering vast, untouched reef systems. To the north and east, the karst landscapes of Buton and Muna islands host hundreds of underwater caves, many of which remain completely unexplored.

Established in 2019, the centre has quickly become the only facility in the province to offer a full spectrum of technical and cave diving services. Whether you are looking to refine your skills in a shallow cavern or embark on a deep sidemount expedition, the centre is designed to support the serious diver. It provides a rare combination of technical expertise and access to some of Indonesia's most remote and intact environments.

The team is composed of experienced instructors and explorers who have personally mapped over 150 caves in the region. This hands-on knowledge ensures that you are guided by people who understand the specific topography and requirements of these limestone systems. The centre operates with a maximum ratio of three divers per guide, ensuring close supervision during technical training and guided explorations.

Communication is seamless for international divers, as the instruction team is multilingual, speaking English, French, Spanish, and Bahasa Indonesia. This makes the centre a reliable choice for those seeking high-level technical instruction in their preferred language.

The course catalogue is extensive, catering to everyone from those looking for an introductory experience to highly advanced technical divers. They offer a complete progression in cave diving, including Cavern Diver, Introductory Cave Diver, Full Cave Diver, Technical Cave Diver, and advanced specialisations such as Survey Diver and Underwater Cave Mapping.

Technical divers can access advanced certifications through RAID and IANTD, including Advanced Nitrox, Advanced Recreational Trimix, and Technical Diver courses. The centre is also an official Triton CCR instructor hub, offering Triton CCR Try Dives, Mod 1, and Crossover courses. For those interested in sidemount, they provide IANTD Open Water Sidemount and Tek Sidemount training, as well as sidemount refresher sessions.

The centre utilises traditional wooden boats for its excursions, providing a local feel while navigating the waters between Baubau and the surrounding islands. These vessels are equipped to handle both reef dives and technical expeditions, with water, snacks, coffee, tea, and lunch provided on board during trips.

For technical divers, the centre is fully equipped to support rebreather operations. They provide essential gases including oxygen and helium, and can assist with scrubber (sorb) requirements. They also offer gas pumping services for emergency cylinders.

Full equipment hire is available on-site for those not travelling with their own kit. The facility is set up to support both recreational and technical divers, ensuring that all necessary components for a successful dive are available locally.

The diving environment is generally stable, with warm water and excellent visibility across the archipelago. For technical cave and sinkhole diving, currents are typically minimal, allowing for precise buoyancy control and exploration.

Access to the Wakatobi reefs is well-supported by local infrastructure, including the availability of a hyperbaric chamber in the area for added safety.
