Depan Tupa, Moluccas: Wall Diving Through Vibrant Corals

Dropping into Depan Tupa, you immediately encounter a dramatic wall that plunges into the depths, its face almost entirely cloaked in a dense, living kaleidoscope. Hard coral colonies in myriad forms proliferate here, creating intricate landscapes that serve as foundational habitats. You'll find yourself gliding past massive gorgonian fans stretching out into the blue, their feathery branches swaying gently, alongside sponges of various shapes and sizes, all contributing to an explosive palette of colour that truly defines this site.

As you traverse the wall, the sheer density of reef fish becomes apparent. Schools of fusiliers cascade over the coral peaks, their movements synchronised as they feed in the gentle surge. Keep an eye out for patrolling barracuda, often solitary and imposing, or small groups of jackfish (Carangue) moving swiftly in the deeper blue. The gaterin, or sweetlips, can be found tucked into coral crevices, their distinctive patterns a subtle contrast to the riot of colour around them.

Closer inspection reveals the intricate lives of the smaller inhabitants. Anthias add splashes of orange and red against the coral, dancing in the water column just above the reef. Majestic angelfish (poisson-ange) glide gracefully, their intricate patterns a visual delight against the backdrop of the vibrant sponges. You might encounter humphead parrotfish (poisson-perroquet à bosse) methodically munching on algae, their powerful jaws carving out sections of coral, contributing to the health of the reef.
