Busuanga Bay Lodge

Busuanga Bay Lodge is the sort of place that suits divers who want the day to have a proper second act. The setting is by the water, the rooms look towards the sea or mountains, and the main lodge gives you somewhere to eat, swim, have a drink or simply let the salt dry off. It is a boutique lodge rather than a town hotel, with 41 units and a distinctly self-contained feel.

The atmosphere is polished without turning the evening into a performance. You have an infinity pool, a spa, a fitness centre, several places for food and drink, and a private white-sand island reached by boat. For couples, the waterfront rooms and the bay-facing spaces make particular sense; for families, the two-bedroom villa gives you a more generous base. The important detail is geographical as much as decorative: you are staying on Busuanga, not in Coron Town.

The lodge sits at Sitio Lawi, Barangay Concepcion, on Busuanga Island in the Philippines. It is directly by the sea, with jungle and reef around the property rather than a row of town streets outside the gate. The ocean is not a distant view here; the lodge is built beside it, with the bay forming the main outlook.

Busuanga Airport is about 17 miles away by road, with a drive of around 33 minutes. Coron Town is much farther, at roughly 22 miles by road, and the surrounding restaurants and bars are spread out rather than clustered next door. Zataras Tropical Restaurant is about 2 miles away by road, while Lolo Nonoys Food Station is around 8 miles away. In practical terms, you come here for the lodge, the bay and the excursions, not for an evening stroll through town.

South Cay, the lodge's private white-sand island, is reached by boat in about 30 to 45 minutes, depending on tide and weather. A complimentary boat transfer connects you with the beach club, where lunch, tropical food, cocktails and cold beer replace the usual post-dive search for somewhere to sit.

The accommodation is designed for two in most categories, with the two-bedroom villa extending the arrangement for a family or a small group. If your priority is waking up close to the bay, the Bayview Bungalow and the Waterfront rooms are the natural choices. The Hilltop Suite gives you more room while keeping the outlook part of the appeal, and the Two-Bedroom Villa is the one to consider when separate sleeping space matters more than being in the smallest, simplest unit.

The rooms are air-conditioned and fitted with individual climate control, a minibar or refrigerator, a safe, wardrobe, HD television with cable channels, daily housekeeping, bathrobes, slippers, toiletries and an umbrella. That is the useful stuff, not just brochure decoration: cold water after a hot boat day, a proper place for valuables, and air conditioning when the combination of sun, salt and humidity has done its work. Private bathrooms include a shower and hairdryer.

Balconies and outdoor furniture give you somewhere to sit without turning the bed into a drying rack for every damp item you own. Beds are extra-large in several room categories, and the property is particularly geared towards comfortable nights. Room service runs from 6:00 am to 9:30 pm, so a late return does not automatically mean dinner has become a packet of biscuits.

Breakfast is included and starts at 6:00 am, which is the sort of detail divers notice before they notice the crockery. The Pavilion, in the clubhouse, covers breakfast, lunch and dinner, with international and local dishes served from the rising sun through to dinner service. Breakfast runs from 6:00 am to 10:00 am, lunch from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, and dinner from 6:00 pm to 9:30 pm.

The food has a proper farm-to-table thread rather than a decorative label. Ingredients come from the lodge's own farm, local farmers and organic greenhouse producers, with fruit, vegetables and herbs used across the menus. Local fishermen supply seafood, including lobster, crab, grouper, mackerel and yellowfin tuna. The chefs are internationally trained, the bread is made in-house, and dietary requirements can be accommodated.

There are four named places for a drink, depending on where you want your feet. Seahorse Bar & Grill at the marina serves steaks, seafood, tapas, wines and signature Busuanga Bay cocktails, with the bay below. The Pool Deck Bar works beside the infinity pool with cocktails, fresh juices, burgers, sandwiches, seafood and snacks. Pavilion Resto adds cocktails, beer, wine and seafood, while SouthCay Bar handles cocktails and beer on the island. Happy hour runs from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm, and the minibar and in-room dining give you quieter options.

The infinity pool measures 10 by 15 metres and looks across Busuanga Bay, with sunbeds and a swim-up bar. It is an easy place to spend the afternoon when your legs have had enough of fins, ladders and boat decks. Pool and beach towels are available, and the lodge also provides non-motorised water sports facilities, including kayaking, paddleboarding and snorkelling.

The Clubhouse Spa is air-conditioned and offers massage, including full-body and couples treatments. The fitness centre has aerobic equipment and light weights, useful if you prefer a short session before breakfast rather than pretending that carrying a camera counts as resistance training. A garden, bicycles, walking and jogging routes near the lodge, trekking, books and board games cover the slower end of the scale.

When you want a proper day away from the property, the excursion menu reaches beyond the bay. You can arrange island and coastal outings to places such as Coral Garden, Pass Island, Black Island, Kayangan Lake, Twin Lagoon and Siete Pecados Reef, as well as inland trips to Concepcion Falls, Maquinit Hot Spring, Coron Town and Mt Tapyas Viewdeck. A sunset cruise is available for the evening when nobody wants another timetable involving fins.

Airport transfers are available, and the lodge also runs shuttle services. For direct reservations with a stay of at least two nights, return airport transfers are included. The road journey from Busuanga Airport takes around 33 minutes over roughly 17 miles. Concierge and tour-desk services can help arrange sightseeing and travel plans, while car hire, laundry and babysitting are also available.

Check-in starts at 2:00 pm and check-out is by 12:00 noon. You need photo identification and a credit card at check-in, and a deposit is collected on arrival. Children of any age are welcome, although cots and extra beds are not available. Pets are not allowed, and payment is by card rather than cash.

Wi-Fi is available, with satellite access described at the Pavilion Restaurant. That makes it perfectly adequate for checking messages and keeping in touch, but this is a bay-side lodge rather than a business hotel with a city network humming in every corner. Room service, a business centre, a meeting room, private and express check-in, a souvenir shop and laundry keep the practical side covered.

The lodge's environmental work covers water, waste, energy and the surrounding habitats. Water management includes desalination, rainwater collection, low-flow showerheads, low-flush toilets and tap aerators. Linen and towel exchange programmes reduce water use.

A wastewater treatment plant and materials recovery facility handle the back end of the operation. Recyclables go to a local scrap dealer, while organic waste is composted for the gardens or organic farm. Reusable water bottles have been used since 2016 to reduce reliance on single-use plastic bottles.

The kitchens also apply the policy to the menu: threatened fish and seasonal seafood are removed from the offering, with sourcing aligned to recognised seafood-monitoring organisations. Local suppliers, farmers and fishermen form part of the lodge's supply chain, while carbon and energy-management measures address emissions and resource use. No badge is needed to explain the practical point: the food, water and waste systems are tied to the place you have come to dive.
