El Rio Y Mar Resort

Set in a secluded bay north of Coron Town, El Rio y Mar Resort is made for you if your idea of an evening is a sea view, a proper meal and somewhere to sit without a road running past the front door. The resort is surrounded by jungle, mangroves and a coral reef, with the water close enough to become part of the day's background rather than a distant excursion.

The atmosphere is relaxed and outdoorsy, but there is enough here to keep a non-diving partner occupied: two swimming pools, a spa, water activities, games, excursions and an open-air restaurant. Children of any age are welcome, and family rooms make the resort workable for more than just couples. This is a place where you can spend the day moving between boat, beach and pool, then retreat to air conditioning when the tropical heat has had its say.

You are in Coron, Philippines, at Barangay San Jose on Busuanga Island. The resort sits directly on the seafront, with a private white-sand beach and a reef immediately in front. El Rio Y Mar Beach is only a few steps away; D' Fisherman's Haven Beach is about 0.5 miles away by the mapped distance.

This is not a hotel beside a town promenade. The bay is isolated, there are no cars at the resort, and access is by boat only. Coron Town takes 45 to 60 minutes by van plus a further 15 to 20 minutes by boat, so you will not be popping out for an evening restaurant on a whim. Maquinit Hot Spring is about 24 miles away. The trade-off is a shoreline setting where the journey is part of the arrival, not an afterthought.

The beach is better suited to snorkelling and water activities than to conventional swimming, with only a small strip considered suitable for bathing. That reef directly outside gives you an easy way to get into the water without turning every wet afternoon into a full expedition.

The accommodation is arranged as cabanas and casas, with balconies, outdoor furniture, air conditioning, fans, sea views and private bathrooms across the room range. You also have a wardrobe, desk, dining area and electric kettle, which covers the useful basics after a long day in the water. The rooms do not have televisions, so the evening naturally shifts towards the balcony, the bar or the sound of the bay.

For a couple, choose the category that makes the most of the sea view and balcony: you will have somewhere to sit while the kit dries off in the ordinary holiday sense and the salt leaves your skin. For a family or a small group, the Premier Cedar Cabana gives you the most room to spread out, while the Deluxe Cabana has two single beds alongside a super-king bed. Both make more sense than trying to turn a compact double room into a storage area for four people and their luggage.

The Superior Casa needs a closer look before you book, as its room details carry no bathroom provision. The other practical point is comfort in the heat: air conditioning matters here, while the fan gives you another way to keep air moving at night. Daily housekeeping, bathrobes, slippers, towels and free toiletries round out the less glamorous but welcome details.

Al Fresco Restaurant handles breakfast, lunch and dinner in an open-air setting. The cooking is international, with local specialities and seafood also part of the offer, so you can keep things familiar or lean into the island location. Breakfast is included and covers continental, American and Asian styles, with vegetarian and gluten-free choices among the buffet options.

The restaurant also caters for vegetarian and vegan diets, with special-diet menus available on request. That matters when you are hungry enough to eat the table as well as the dinner. The open-air arrangement lets you take your time over a meal with the sea breeze and the view doing some of the work.

There is one bar: Port Caltom's Reef Bar. It serves cocktails and other refreshments beside the water, with a happy hour from 16:00 to 19:00. Sunset is the obvious appointment, although feeding the fish from the bar is also part of the setting. A coffee house is available on site, and room service gives you another option when the day's exertions have beaten your enthusiasm for dressing for dinner.

Two pools give you a choice of views and depth. The main infinity pool reaches 2.1 metres and stays open until 22:00, with views towards Port Caltom and the mountains; the second pool ranges from 0.9 to 2.1 metres and measures 10 by 12 metres. Sun loungers, umbrellas and pool or beach towels keep the practical side covered while you decide whether to swim or simply remain horizontal.

The spa is the unusual part. The Island Spa offers full-body massages, facials, body scrubs, hand and foot massages, manicures, pedicures and traditional Hilot treatments. The Floating Spa places the massage table on the water, allowing you to watch fish below while you are being worked on. Treatments can also take place on the beach, and couples' massages are available.

Away from the water, you can hike, cycle, play badminton, darts, table tennis or use the games room. Kayaking, paddleboarding, snorkelling and fishing are available, along with boat excursions and island-hopping. The resort also offers tours to Coron Island, including Kayangan Lake, Barracuda Lake, Twin Lagoon and Maquinit Hot Springs, as well as a Calauit wildlife sanctuary visit. A library, video room, karaoke room and beach volleyball give a non-diving companion several ways to fill the day without simply waiting for your return.

Your transfer from Busuanga Airport is organised by the resort. Allow 15 to 20 minutes by van to Decalachao port, followed by another 15 to 20 minutes by boat to the property. The airport is about 8 miles away by the road route, but the boat connection is part of the journey, so plan around the combined transfer rather than treating the airport distance as a simple car ride.

Check-in runs from 14:00 to 18:00, and check-out from 11:30 to 12:00. The tour desk, concierge service, luggage storage, currency exchange and express check-in or check-out are useful when your travel plans do not line up neatly with room times. Car hire and packed lunches are also available through the resort.

Wi-Fi is available throughout the property at no extra charge, although the practical strength of the connection may matter less here than whether you actually want to be online. You can pay with cash, Visa, Mastercard or American Express. Children of any age are welcome, with cots and extra beds available on request depending on the accommodation chosen.

The resort looks after rescued dogs and cats. It is a small, concrete part of the property's relationship with its surroundings, alongside the bay, mangroves and reef that shape your stay.
