Sangat Island Dive Resort

Sangat Island Dive Resort is built for divers who would rather trade traffic and town noise for a private island, a beachfront table and a bed reached by a short walk through tropical surroundings. The resort occupies much of the south-western tip of Sangat Island, with 22 traditionally styled, low-impact units spread between the beach and the hills. It is a proper island stay, not a hotel with a decorative palm tree by reception.

You can spend the day in and around the water, then settle on the sand or under the trees with a drink and nowhere particular to be. The setting suits couples especially well, while family-friendly chalet options make it workable for groups too. Nature is very much part of the arrangement: jungle, limestone cliffs, coconut palms and sea views come as standard scenery rather than an optional excursion.

You are in Coron, Philippines, on Sangat Island along the northern edge of Coron Bay in Palawan's Calamian Islands. The resort sits directly beside a 300-metre stretch of white sand, with the sea in front and dense island terrain behind it. Three beaches, a mangrove maze, a 455-metre summit, a tropical fruit and nut plantation, a geothermal hot spring and two local marine ecosystems belong to the island itself.

This is an isolated location, and that shapes the holiday. Busuanga Airport is 10 miles away as the crow flies, while Coron Town is part of the transfer route rather than your evening doorstep. Kalitang Beach is about 0.7 miles away, although you already have direct access to the resort's own beach. Nearby restaurants and bars are several miles away, so the resort's own restaurant and bars matter rather more here than they would in town.

The accommodation is divided between beachside and hillside chalets, with private entrances and balconies looking towards the sea or the slopes. For a couple, a hilltop chalet keeps things simple: one double bed, a private balcony and the island around you. If you are travelling with family or a small group, the larger beachside options and the Lambingam Villa give you more room to spread out without turning the bedroom into a kit-room catalogue.

The practical detail is important here. Fan-cooled bungalows have mosquito nets, wardrobes and private bathrooms with ambient-temperature, cold-water showers. Three chalets have air-conditioning and hot showers, so choose one of those if warm water and a cooler room are part of your post-dive recovery plan. The beachside chalet with air conditioning is the obvious fit when you want the shore nearby without giving up those comforts.

Every unit has its own entrance and outdoor space, with views either towards the sea or the hillside. Daily housekeeping keeps the routine straightforward, while the beds have been singled out for their comfort. Upper-floor accommodation is reached by stairs, and the resort's chalets stand on stilts or hills, so you should be happy with steps before booking. There is also a private bathroom in each unit, although the standard shower arrangement is cold water rather than the hotel-style hot shower you may be used to.

Meals are part of the stay, with breakfast, lunch and dinner served in an open-air restaurant beside the beach. The kitchen works in a global-fusion style, using freshly caught seafood alongside chicken, pork, vegetables, salads and tropical fruit. Breakfast is a buffet, and a daily afternoon snack comes with a tea and coffee station. After a morning in the water, that is the sort of detail that earns its keep.

Vegetarian dishes and special dietary requirements can be handled on request, and packed lunches can be prepared for island-hopping trips. The restaurant serves throughout the day and into the evening, which suits the resort's self-contained island setting: you do not need to arrange a boat simply because you have become hungry.

There are two bars. The Sangat Island Bar has a comfortable conversation lounge and a full-size billiards table, while the Rock Bar puts its seating outdoors with views across the beach by day and the stars at night. Both serve cocktails, wine, San Miguel beer and local craft beer. Happy hour is available, and a snack bar adds something less formal when a full meal feels like too much work.

The 300-metre beach gives you room to find a sun lounger, sit beneath the palms or do absolutely nothing with professional concentration. The resort also has a sun terrace, garden areas and direct access to the sea. A massage is available when your shoulders have had enough of carrying bottles, although this is a massage service rather than a separate spa complex.

For a more active surface interval, you can arrange kayaking, paddleboarding, jet-skiing, fishing and island-hopping trips. Snorkelling and other on-site water activities are also available. The island provides more solid ground for hiking, wildlife observation, cultural excursions and rock climbing, with a visit to the geothermal hot springs and Sangat Island Farm among the listed outings.

Couples can keep the day as busy or as spare as they like: paddle out together, take a walk through the island, or claim a table at the bar for a game of billiards. Families have suitable bungalow accommodation, children of any age are welcome, and children's meals are available. There is no children's club to organise the day for them, which may be either a drawback or a welcome return to actual family conversation.

Arrival needs a little planning because the resort is on an island. The usual route is by air to Busuanga, then by van towards Coron Town, followed by a banca boat to Sangat Island; the boat crossing takes 40 minutes. Transfers from the airport are arranged by the resort, and round-trip airport transfers are included with stays. You should give the resort your expected arrival time before you travel, particularly as check-in runs from 14:00 to 19:00.

Check-out is from 12:00 to 12:30. Private check-in and check-out, wake-up service, daily housekeeping, laundry and a safety deposit box are available, with laundry carrying an additional charge. Wi-Fi is free throughout the resort, although a remote island setting is not where you come for urban-level connectivity. Cash is the accepted payment method listed for the property.

The site is not designed for step-free access: chalets may be on stilts or hills, upper floors are reached by stairs, and there are no accessible rooms. Extra beds can be requested, while cots are not available. Pets are not allowed. The resort has its own restaurant, bars and activities, so you can plan to stay on the island rather than relying on outside dining or transport.

The resort operates away from the public electricity grid, using solar power as its main energy source and diesel generators only as back-up. Its solar installation supplies the resort's operations, including refrigeration, ice-making, air compressors and the desalination plant. Fresh water comes from that desalination plant rather than a mainland supply.

The practical measures are broad rather than decorative: natural building materials, recycling, reduced plastic use, reusable containers, paper or metal straws, energy efficiency and sustainable sourcing. The island also supports lower-impact activities such as kayaking, snorkelling and paddleboarding. Staff training, stakeholder awareness and proactive environmental measures form part of the resort's wider approach to running an isolated property.
