Buko Beach Resort

Bare feet, native-style design, a terrace outside your room and the sea doing most of the decorating: Buko Beach Resort keeps things centred on the coast. You stay directly on Corong Corong Beach, with a sandy shore, loungers and parasols just outside. It is an adults-only resort, so the atmosphere is aimed at couples and grown-up travellers rather than family logistics and poolside negotiations.

The useful part for a diver is the uncomplicated layout of the day. Air-conditioned rooms give you somewhere cool to recover, the restaurant is on site, and the beach is right there when you want a swim, a sunset or simply a chair with no further plan attached. There is also an outdoor pool overlooking the sea. Nothing here asks you to dress up the evening; you can finish the day with dinner, a drink and the sort of tiredness that does not require entertainment.

You are in Corong Corong, El Nido, on the island of Palawan in the Philippines, with the resort set directly on the beach. El Nido town is only a few minutes away, close enough for an outing without turning every meal into a transport operation. The immediate surroundings are useful rather than remote: several restaurants and bars are within a short walk, including Outpost Beach Bar and Restaurant, Ate Than Sunset Bar and Grill and Republica Sunset Bar.

Marimegmeg Beach is about 0.8 miles away, while Lapus Lapus Beach is roughly 1.1 miles away. Papaya Beach and Seven Commandos Beach are each about 2.3 miles by road. Nacpan Beach takes around 45 minutes by car, so it is a proper excursion rather than a spontaneous stroll after breakfast.

El Nido Airport is roughly 4.4 miles away, with a drive of around 20–30 minutes. The ferry terminal is about a 12-minute drive from the resort. Corong Corong is the practical base here: beach in front, town nearby, and the airport close enough that your arrival and departure do not consume the whole day.

The room choice is mainly about how much space and outlook you want. The Sea View Cottage is the obvious couple’s choice if opening towards the water matters more than having a large interior. The Garden View Cottage gives you the same cottage idea with the greenery outside instead. Both have a terrace, air conditioning and an outdoor bathroom with hot shower facilities, which is a pleasant change from bringing the entire beach indoors.

If you are travelling as a larger group, the villas change the calculation completely. The private-pool villa accommodates up to eight guests and has four bathrooms, while the garden-view villa accommodates up to six with two bathrooms. That is the difference between a group holiday that works and a daily queue outside one shower. For two people, the Studio with Balcony is the more compact option, with a super-king-size bed and a balcony.

Every room is air-conditioned, and a fan is also available. You have a refrigerator, kettle, tea and coffee-making facilities, a dining area or seating area depending on the accommodation, and a drying rack for clothes. After salt water, sun and a long boat day, those small details earn their keep. Daily housekeeping, Wi-Fi throughout the resort, a wardrobe and a private bathroom are part of the practical setup, while selected rooms also bring garden or sea-facing views.

The restaurant sits on the beach, with sea views and sunsets included in the setting rather than added as a separate excursion. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served there, so you can keep the day pleasantly simple: coffee and food before heading out, a proper meal when you return, and no frantic search for somewhere open when your legs have remembered the dive ladder.

Breakfast is served à la carte, with Full English or Irish, vegetarian, Asian and American choices. Vegetarian and vegan diets can be catered for, and special-diet menus are available on request. The food is described as generous, which is welcome news when your appetite has been working harder than your watch.

There is one on-site bar, along with a snack bar, minibar facilities and room service. Happy hour is available, and wine or champagne can be ordered. Breakfast can also come to your room. The resort does not present a complicated dining circuit; it gives you a beach restaurant, drinks close by and enough flexibility to eat where you are rather than where an itinerary tells you to be.

The main pool is an infinity pool with a sea view, which gives you an easy answer when the idea of another boat trip feels ambitious. Pool and beach towels are available, and the beach itself comes with loungers and parasols. You can move between the water, the sand and a shaded seat without turning relaxation into a project.

For a slower afternoon, in-room massages include full-body, couples, head, neck, back, hand and foot treatments. Body scrubs, body wraps, facials, manicures, pedicures and other beauty treatments are also available. A couples massage fits neatly into the rhythm of a shared diving holiday: one person does not have to spend the afternoon inventing an activity while the other recovers.

When you want to leave the resort, the tour desk can arrange excursions. The possibilities listed include boat trips, island visits, waterfalls, markets and snorkelling. Board games and puzzles cover the smaller gaps in the day. Car hire is available too, although the beach, the pool and the nearby bars may already be making a strong case for staying put.

Check-in starts from 14:00 and check-out runs until 12:00. The front desk is open from 06:00 to 22:00, with 24-hour security. You should give the resort your expected arrival time, and you will need photo identification and a credit card at check-in. Luggage storage, express check-in and check-out, and tour arrangements are available when your travel plans do not line up neatly with room times.

An airport shuttle can be arranged with the hotel, either privately or as a shared service. The same applies to the resort shuttle. Payment instructions are handled through PayPal or bank transfer, and online card payments are not currently available at the property; cash is an accepted payment method. Private parking is available nearby, subject to limited spaces and reservation. That is worth sorting before arrival rather than discovering it with luggage in the back of a vehicle.

The access road is unpaved and may not suit every vehicle. On-site functions may take place, and some rooms can be affected by noise, so light sleepers should choose their accommodation with care. Guests aged over 12 are welcome under the published child policy, while the minimum age for check-in is 18. Laundry, room service, packed lunches, a safety deposit box and car hire add useful support around the edges of a diving trip.
