Espirito Azul

Espírito Azul is a dedicated diving and nautical tourism centre located in the Vila Franca do Campo Marina on São Miguel, Azores. The centre serves as a gateway to the archipelago's most significant underwater features, from shallow reef flats to deep offshore seamounts.

Operating from a prime location, the centre organises daily departures to a variety of sites, including the famous Formigas and Dollabarat banks. The team is composed of experienced, multilingual professionals capable of conducting instruction in English, Portuguese, French, German, and Russian. This diversity ensures clear communication for international divers during both recreational and technical courses.

Safety and precision are central to their operations, with a strict ratio of one guide per diver. The centre is affiliated with several major international bodies, including PADI, SSI, SDI/TDI, CMAS, and DAN, ensuring that all training and safety protocols meet global standards.

The training programme is extensive, covering everything from Scuba Diver and Open Water Diver through to Master Diver. They offer a full suite of PADI and SSI specialties, including Deep Diver, Wreck, and Navigation.

For technical divers, the centre provides advanced training in Nitrox, Trimix, and rebreather diving. They also offer gas blender courses for those looking to specialise in Nitrox and Trimix blending, as well as professional paths such as Divemaster and Assistant Instructor.

The centre utilises lanchas rápidas (fast motorboats) to reach the more distant offshore sites. These vessels allow for efficient transit to the seamounts and banks, such as Ambrósio and Dollabarat, which are essential for seeing larger pelagics.

For those looking for a different experience, the centre also facilitates sailing cruises in partnership with Water and Wind. These excursions offer a different way to explore the Azorean coastline and its surrounding waters.

The shore-based facilities include a fully equipped classroom for theoretical training and a dedicated area for equipment maintenance. Certified technicians are available on-site to handle equipment servicing, ensuring your kit is ready for the Atlantic conditions.

For divers requiring rental kit, a complete range is available for hire, though you should bring your own dive computer, torch, and knife. The centre is fully equipped to support technical diving, providing Nitrox and Trimix gas blending services on-site.

The waters around São Miguel are a magnet for large pelagics. During the summer, you can encounter Whale shark (Rhincodon typus), Manta ray (Mobula alfredi), and various mobula rays. Tuna (Thunnus) are also frequently seen in the area during this period.

In the more permanent habitats, you will find a variety of reef fish and larger predators. Great barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda), various Jacks (Carangidae), and Amberjack (Seriola) are common, alongside moray eels (Muraenidae) and various stingrays. You may also spot octopus (Octopus vulgaris) and different species of rays.

For those interested in smaller life, the reefs host a range of interesting species including nudibranchs and various reef fish. The volcanic structures provide plenty of crevices for moray eels and other secretive inhabitants to thrive.
