Go Shark Azores

Based in the Marina de Horta on Faial, Go Shark Azores operates with a specific focus on marine biology and the observation of sharks and rays. The centre is led by Silvio Solleliet-Ferreira, a marine biologist with over 10 years of experience in the field.

Rather than standard tourism, the approach here is rooted in education and conservation. You can choose to observe Blue sharks from the boat or head into the water for snorkeling, freediving, or scuba diving to encounter Manta rays at Princess Alice Bank.

The centre is led by a specialist marine biologist, ensuring that every excursion is grounded in scientific understanding. This expertise makes it an ideal choice for divers interested in the ecology and conservation of the species they encounter.

The team provides instruction in English, French, and Portuguese. To ensure safety and a close encounter with the local marine life, all excursions are conducted in small groups of a maximum of 8 people.

As an SSI affiliated centre, Go Shark Azores provides a full range of certifications. You can train from Scuba diving basics through to more advanced levels.

The centre also offers specialised training in Freediving.

The centre operates a Federica-type vessel, which is used for trips out to the local dive sites. The boat has a capacity for 8 people maximum.

On board, you will find snacks and drinks provided for the trip. The vessel is also equipped with a chum box to assist in shark observation sessions.

Full rental kit is available on-site, including wetsuits, masks, snorkels, fins, and weight belts. For those requiring extra protection, hoodies and gloves are also available for hire.

For those looking to improve their skills, the centre offers check-dives to ensure you are comfortable with the local conditions before heading out.

The area is a premier location for pelagic encounters. You can regularly encounter Blue sharks (Prionace glauca), shortfin mako sharks, and Whale sharks (Rhincodon typus). Large schools of tuna (Thunnus), barracudas (Sphyraena), and amberjacks (Seriola) are common in these waters.

Manta rays are a highlight of the region and can be seen throughout the year. You will also encounter Eagle rays (Aetobatus), stingrays (Myliobatiformes), and various other species including stingrays (Hypanus americanus).

Other notable inhabitants include sea turtles, groupers (Epinephelinae), and barracudas (Sphyraena). You may also spot various types of rays, including stingrays and whiprays.

The pinnacles and underwater mountains in the area can be exposed to currents. Planning your dive around these conditions is essential for a safe and enjoyable experience.
