Blue Water Diving

Blue Water Diving is situated in Puerto Rico on the island of Gran Canaria, a destination known for its year-round diving opportunities. The centre has been operating for two decades, having established its roots in mainland Spain before moving to the Canary Islands in 2015.

As a PADI 5 Star IDC centre, the facility serves a wide range of divers, from those taking their first breaths underwater to professional candidates training for instructor ratings. The operation focuses on small group sizes to ensure a personalised experience whether you are diving from a boat or exploring the local reef from the shore.

The centre is led by owners Chris and Kate, who bring 25 years of experience to the island. The team is composed of qualified PADI Divemasters and professional instructors, providing a multilingual service to accommodate international divers.

Training is geared towards all ages, with specific programmes available for children starting from 8 years old. The team also maintains a strong environmental focus, participating in ocean cleaning initiatives through Project Aware and adopting local sites like Amadores Beach for conservation efforts.

The course catalogue is extensive, covering the full spectrum of PADI certifications. Beginners can start with Discover Scuba Diving, Scuba Diver, or the Open Water Diver course. For those looking to progress, the Advanced Open Water Diver, Deep Diver, and Wreck Diver specialties are available.

Professional training is a core part of the centre's identity as an IDC centre, offering Divemaster and Instructor Development courses. Technical and skill-specific training is also provided, including the PADI Sidemount Course, PADI Drysuit Course, PADI Enriched Air Nitrox, and the PADI Underwater Navigator course. For those needing a refresher, the ReActivate Scuba Refresher Program is available.

The centre provides a full range of rental kit for those not travelling with their own equipment. This includes regulators, wetsuits, fins, and torches for night diving.

Nitrox is available on-site for divers looking to extend their bottom times. The facility is well-equipped to handle the needs of both recreational and training divers, providing the necessary infrastructure for shore and boat-based activities.

The local waters are home to a diverse array of pelagics and reef fish. You can regularly encounter Great barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda), almaco jacks, and various species of jacks (Carangidae). Schools of fish, including sea bream (Sparidae) and mullet (Mugilidae), are common sights across the different dive sites.

On the sandy bottoms and near the reefs, you will find various rays, including stingrays (Hypanus americanus), butterfly rays, and eagle rays (Aetobatus). Angel sharks (Squatina) are a notable species to look out for in the area.

Macro life and crustaceans are abundant, including Canary Islands lobsters, octopus (Octopus vulgaris), cuttlefish (Sepiidae), and various species of crabs such as arrow crabs. For those interested in smaller details, keep an eye out for nudibranchs, seahorses (Hippocampus kuda), and scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae).

Fixed life adds colour to the underwater landscape, with sightings of gorgonians, sea fans (Gorgoniidae), and various hard and soft corals. You may also encounter sea anemones (Actiniaria) and different species of anemone fish.

Diving in Gran Canaria is possible all year round. The local sites offer a variety of environments, from calm beach entries at Amadores Beach to more varied shore and boat dives.
