Flamingo Wall, Lanzarote: Shore Diving in Playa Blanca

The Flamingo Wall dive site, also known as Playa Flamingo, is defined by a man-made breakwater that creates a sheltered bay, offering an easy shore entry. As you enter the water, you'll find yourself in a shallow area, with the main wall structure beginning around 9 metres. This artificial reef acts as a magnet for marine life, providing immediate interest from the start of your dive. The transition from the sandy seafloor to the vertical face of the wall is where much of the activity concentrates, with creatures adapted to both environments.

The wall itself is not a uniform structure; it presents a varied topography with ledges, overhangs, and small crevices. These features offer shelter and hunting grounds, making it worthwhile to inspect them closely as you descend. Schools of bastard grunts move along the wall, and barracuda are often seen patrolling the area. The ecosystem supports a full food chain, from smaller invertebrates to larger predators that use the wall as a hunting ground.

Beyond the resident reef fish, the site also attracts larger species. Butterfly rays are a common sight, gliding over the sandy bottom near the wall. Angel sharks can be found resting on the sand, and sea turtles occasionally pass through. While the focus is often on the life directly on the wall, maintaining awareness of your surroundings, both on the structure and in the blue, can lead to unexpected encounters with these transient visitors.

The sheltered nature of the bay means that currents at Flamingo Wall are generally light, making it an accessible site for divers of all levels. This calm environment is consistent with the protected south coast of Playa Blanca. However, like any coastal site, conditions can vary with tidal changes, which may influence the maximum reported depth and the movement of water, particularly around the breakwater structure. Planning your dive with local conditions in mind is always a good practice.

This site is particularly well-suited for beginners due to its easy access and generally calm conditions, but it also offers enough diversity to keep experienced divers engaged. The concentration of fish life behind the breakwater wall, with reports of large shoals, provides a dynamic environment.
