Hotel Tropical Park suits you if a diving trip needs a proper place to land at the end of the day, rather than a bed and four walls with the personality of a waiting room. You stay in an apartment-style suite with a balcony, air conditioning and a kitchenette, while the outdoor pool and sun terrace keep the hotel useful on the days when the sea has had enough of you — or you have had enough of the sea.

The hotel is set up for couples, families and groups of friends, with spacious family suites as well as smaller suites for two or three guests. Its website is available in English, Spanish, French, German and Polish, so English-speaking guests are clearly part of the audience the hotel is used to welcoming. The atmosphere is practical rather than precious: eat on site, pick up something from the minimarket, stretch out by the pool and decide later whether the evening deserves tapas or an early night.

You are in Callao Salvaje, on the south-west coast of Tenerife, rather than in the busier resort centre of Playa de Las Américas. The hotel sits 150 metres from the beach, roughly 0.1 miles on foot, with Playa de Ajabo around 0.3 miles away by the more direct local route. Las Galgas Beach is about 1 mile away on foot, while Playa El Pinque is around 1.4 miles away.

That gives you a residential base with the coast within easy reach and the livelier resort area about a 10-minute drive away. A minimarket is on site, smaller shops are within a five-minute walk, and several independent restaurants are close by, including Nebula Restaurant, Terraza El Jable and Rincón Criollo, each around 500 feet away. Tenerife South Airport is about 16 miles away by road, with the hotel also offering a shuttle service to arrange directly with the property.

The useful distinction here is not the room label; it is how much living space you want around the dive kit bags, wet towels and the person who insists on making tea before speaking. Every apartment has a seating area, dining area, sofa and balcony, with a kitchenette equipped with a fridge, microwave, oven, toaster, kettle, coffee machine and basic kitchenware. That gives you somewhere to keep cold drinks and somewhere to assemble a late snack without turning the evening into a restaurant expedition.

Couples can choose a standard suite or one with a lateral sea view, while the pool-view versions keep the outlook firmly hotel-based. Families have the extra room of the Family Suites, designed for larger groups and equipped for self-catering. There is a single bathroom in the suites, so a little timetable discipline may be useful when several people are returning from the beach or preparing for an early start.

Air conditioning matters in Tenerife when you come back warm, salty and ready to stop moving. The tiled floors, wardrobe, towels, hairdryer and daily housekeeping cover the straightforward practicalities, while satellite and cable television give you something to watch when the legs have finally surrendered. Quiet hours run from 21:00 to 09:00, which helps if your idea of nightlife is a shower followed by horizontal thinking.

Breakfast is served as a buffet at Restaurante Buffet Pitaya, which also covers lunch and dinner. The kitchen combines local and international dishes, with themed plates changing from evening to evening. Tenerife gets a proper turn at the table too, with island specialities such as papas arrugadas, mojo picón, gofio, escal­dón de gofio, sancocho and local cheeses. It is the sort of menu that lets you try something from the island without requiring you to make a separate expedition in search of it.

There are two named bars. Bar Piscina handles refreshing cocktails and light appetisers beside the pool, while the Snack Bar covers sandwiches, salads, light bites and cold drinks for the moments when a full meal feels unnecessarily ambitious. Snacking runs from 11:00 to 17:30 in summer, extending to 18:00 in the stated seasonal schedule; all-inclusive guests have separate service periods from 11:00 to 12:30 and 15:30 to 17:30.

For a more deliberate evening, Litchi Drinks & Tapas Restaurante serves tapas and raciones with wines and cocktails from Tuesday to Saturday, from 18:30, with the kitchen open until 22:00. Half board is available, but drinks are not included, so factor that into the evening ritual before the first glass mysteriously becomes three.

Three outdoor pools give you different ways to spend an off-duty afternoon. El Ocho is the main pool and is heated, with a ramp for guests with reduced mobility; La Pileta is the children's pool and is also heated. Both sit near the children's play area and Bar Piscina. Upstairs, Oasis is next to the jacuzzi, offering a quieter change of level for a dip or a lie-down. The pool areas are non-smoking, and loungers, umbrellas and pool towels are available.

The spa keeps the post-dive recovery fairly simple: massages, beauty treatments and hairdressing. That includes couples' massage, along with back, neck, head, foot, hand and full-body options. A gym and fitness centre cover the more energetic version of a rest day, although nobody will object if your exercise consists of walking to the pool with admirable purpose.

If sitting still becomes impossible, you can use the tennis court, squash facilities, table tennis, darts, billiards and pétanque. Golf is available within 3 miles, while paid bicycle hire, horse riding, hiking and cultural excursions widen the radius. A half-day Teide excursion is among the organised options, and the wider programme includes visits to places such as Los Gigantes, Garachico and La Orotava, as well as Tenerife's themed parks.

Check-in runs from 14:00 to 16:00, and you need to tell the hotel your expected arrival time. Photo identification and a credit card are required at check-in. Check-out is available from 05:00 to midnight, useful if your flight is ungodly early or your holiday has been stretched to the last possible minute.

Free Wi-Fi covers the hotel, and nearby public street parking is free, although spaces cannot be reserved. The property has a 24-hour front desk, luggage storage, a concierge service, tour desk, currency exchange and an on-site cash machine. Car hire is available, and a shuttle service can be arranged with the hotel; ask about the available form when booking rather than assuming it will run on your preferred timetable.
