Île de Forana Nord-Ouest: Corsica's shallow reef nursery

Diving the Île de Forana Nord-Ouest takes you along a rocky plateau that defines the north-western side of Forana. This isn't a dramatic wall dive; instead, you're tracing a natural slope, keeping you within a comfortable depth range. The topography consists of numerous nooks and crannies within the rock formations, offering shelter and hiding spots for smaller species and juveniles.

Your descent begins in the shallows, around 3 metres, gradually working its way down to a maximum of 15 metres. This profile makes for extended bottom times and allows for careful exploration of the reef's structure. The gentle slope and varied rockwork create a mosaic of habitats, transitioning from sunlit upper sections to more shadowed areas as you gain depth, each supporting distinct communities.

This particular section of Forana is known for its role as a nursery. The sheltered nature of the site and its relatively shallow profile provide a safe haven for young marine creatures to develop. As you navigate the plateau, you'll encounter a rich population of nudibranchs, often found grazing on the rocks and algae. Moray eels are also resident here, peeking out from their rocky crevices.

Groupers are a common sight, often observed patrolling the reef edges or resting within larger rock formations. Keep an eye out for schooling barracuda, amberjacks, and jacks, which frequently cruise in the slightly deeper water, especially where the plateau meets the open sea. Tunas are less frequent visitors but can sometimes be spotted passing through the area, particularly at certain times of the year.

The environment here is defined by its protected nature, especially when compared to other more exposed sites around Forana. While the Cerbicale reserve can experience strong winds and significant sea states, this north-western plateau often provides a degree of shelter. This makes it a more accessible dive, even when conditions elsewhere might be challenging.

Visibility at Île de Forana Nord-Ouest tends to be good, though localized conditions can always influence clarity. The predominant feature remains the vibrant life supported by the nursery habitat. The interplay of light filtering through the shallower water illuminates the varied colours of the reef, creating an engaging visual experience throughout the dive.
